i'm about to pull the plug on LR 5.7 and purchase the monthly LR CC subscription. i see it on amazon for $7.99/month. i have 2 questions: 1) has anyone used the amazon plan? any negative issues with it? 2) what happens if/when you cancel your subscription? are your pictures still available and will they be able to be opened by another program?
thanks

If you look carefully you will likely find the 7.99 is for the first year only and you must pay for one year upfront. Also available from other sources.

Still a good deal!

Note that it also includes Photoshop.

With Lightroom your image files stay unchanged on your computer. But if you want to see image changes without Lightroom you will need to have exported them.

I understsood you could use Lightroom free as a viewer, though.

The second part of your question is a "little" tricky.

Yes, you can still open all of the photos that are either JPEG, TIFF (without layers) or raw. Your original raws will show up as original, but you won't see your edits. (you don't really ever edit the raw image, you create a bunch if instructions that get saved in a sidecar file, that opens, and adjusts the raw photos when you open them up in your library. A way around this is to edit the photos in Lightroom, then export them to another file as TIFF. That way, they are saved with edits, and have no issues like the JPEG saving artifacts that happen with the compression every time it is saved as a JPEG)

Frankly, you don't need to save them as TIFF files, until you know that you are going to do away with CC. Even then, if you don't have CC any more, are you going to be editing those raw files in the future? If not, just export as JPEG, and be happy with what you have done.

If I ruled the world (or Adobe) the one thing I would change out of everything, is to change the blasted name. Your photos are not in the cloud, everything is still yours, and on your computer. Adobe won't just delete them if you stop using their service. What you will lose is the ability to read the sidecar files, or layers created in photoshop.

I hope all that makes sense. The voices in my head all seem to understand it, and trust me, they aren't very bright.

thanks, even if it's only a small savings, i'll take it! i'm concerned that after reading some reviews on amazon, some people said they weren't happy purchasing through amazon and felt they should've ordered directly though adobe. i was wondering if anyone here purchased through amazon???

What REALLY scares me, is when someone understands me.

What I don't know for sure, is if your LR-5, can still open something created in LR-CC? My guess is that you'll get errors telling you that some features can't be opened, but the file would still open OK. If there is even a chance that you may want to use LR-5 in the future, you might want to import or convert all your raw files to DNG, so they are more universal, just in case your camera isn't supported by LR-5 if/when the time comes. I don't personally convert, because it takes forever, and those voices in my head are VERY impatient. (bunch of jerks)

The Lightroom process does not do other image types differently than RAW. That is if you shoot in jpeg and edit in Lightroom those edits also do not affect the original jpeg. They are stored in the catalog as instructions.

You only get a changed jpeg when you export.

Oh, and I found the other day that if you "Edit in" Photoshop, go back to Lightroom by closing Photoshop (with a new tiff), and then "Edit in" that tiff it does preserve the layers.

I lost 9000 images from Lightroom, by a worm or some such evil. No one including Adobe has been able to locate them, and I've had "experts" to look. Adobe by phone had a guy with strong accent attempting via the search by permission method. When the cursor stopped moving I asked if he was still there. He wasn't. So much for Adobe's help. I thought that Adobe Cloud had things stored. It doesn't. I'm no longer a fan of Adobe and I'm looking for something else.

You want Adobe to help you with a worm? Do you call McAfee to help with Lightroom? get real!

I agree! There is more confusion about the 'cloud' question than almost anything else, except possibly the whole 'import' idea!

I'll bet any amount of money the guy with the strong accent was from India.

You win the bet. Give the money to Capture. He needs it and a whole lot more to fix his problem.

You want to blame some company because you don't understand a "Cloud" . You counted on Adobe to keep copies of your files, not very smart. You just learned a expensive lesson.. At least I hope you learned.

You got it right, buddy. Doesn't that make you feel smart? I hope so, because you really aren't. I already knew that I didn't know. So who's the smartest? You'll never know because you're so full of yourself.
