You should do it. MT also has a variety of Nest tripods. they seem to be a good tripod and a great value.

Contact MT before you go. I stopped by on a trip home from Minnesota and Canada--Boundary Waters-- to New Mexico. He couldn't have been more gracious.

I own both the Nest Gimbal and a Nest Tripod. Dollar for dollar you can not go wrong with Nest & MT Shooter (Camera Cottage).

I'm very happy with my Nest Gimbal head too! I just wish my sigma 150-600 contemporary lens had more than one mounting point on the foot. I find that sometimes the lens starts turning on the plate when I pan, but that's the fault of the foot on my lens and not the Nest Gimbal head.

I was concerned about that also, but I bought a Desmond DPL-100 Long Lens Quick-Release Plate (100mm). It has a little ledge on the back which you tighten up snug at the back of the lens foot. I was sceptical but it stayed perfectly in place for 3 weeks of heavy shooting. I even carried the camera and lens attached to the nest gimbal with the tripod over my shoulder. (I can't say this a perfectly safe solution but it worked for me.)

Glad to read about the Nest Gimbals. I have the Sigma 150-600 Sport and will be looking at a gimbal soon. Have not gotten a tripod yet either. I'm inquiring about what kind and size of tripod and what size Nest Gimbal head you purchased. I've gone crazy looking at all that's out there. Really a lot of choices to chose from. You really want to get your selection right the first time or you'll be spending more money down the road getting a different choice. I want to stay with a Nest Gimbal set up. With a Tripod that is compatible also. Thanks for your input. I was thinking of driving out there to MT's place but have not decided yet. My better half is not too welcome to that idea.
Glad to read about the Nest Gimbals. I have the S... (show quote)

What's not to like about a beautiful drive to Montana? I bought the only size that Nest makes that I am aware of. I've had my Benro Travel Angel Carbon Fiber tripod for several years. It is fairly light and has survived airline baggage handlers on many many flights.

I think it is a nice compromise between weight and stability. I won't say it is perfect, but if it is very windy or I need the utmost in stability for a long exposure I simply only extend the legs part way and hang my camera backpack from the provided center hook.

Putting the Nest head on it made it much much safer for balancing the camera and long lens. It is easy to adjust it so the combo is balanced which greatly reduces any chance of it falling over.

Also, one leg of the Benro unscrews to be made into a monopod which makes it even handier for traveling flexibility.

Dittos here. Same setup.   Also picked up the interchangeable bases so I can swap the gimbal out for doing landscapes, etc.

Please explain or show a link to the interchangeable bases. Thanks.

Sounds like something I need to get!

I got the Promaster GH10 for half the price of the Nest and it is just as effective.

It might be a fine head, I've never seen or tried it. Have you used the Nest head in comparison extensively? I somehow doubt it. If it is so good, please start your own thread rather than trying to hijack mine. Thank you.

I own the Nest, I have handled the Promaster, Promaster loses: not as smooth, not as well built, doesn't hold as much weight.

Well at double the price, it out to be better. But it's no where near two times better.

Nest gimbal is not much good in cold weather, it gets too stiff.

Don't let the Shooter acolytes hear that.

It has fluid dampening, none of the high end fluid dampened heads really like very cold weather. The fluid gets thick.

I use the Nest Gimbal with a Nest tripod and have zero complaints. Both handle my 150-600mm Sigma Sport just fine. Check with MT Shooter he also has a large selection of used Tripods for sale.

thanks for the input. I'm still wondering about the stiffness of the nest Gimbal when it gets colder and I don't like to be bothered with carrying around an wrench to change top plates on the tripod.

Just to pass it along, after being sold out of the Nest gimbal heads for almost two months, a fresh shipment of 50 heads is due to arrive later this week.

What "top plates" are you needing a wrench to change?
