Jhola, West Bengal.
These children come from very poor families in a remote rural district. The children would be in rags if the school didn't provide them with some decent clothing, the school also provides them with one meal a day to ensure that they get the nutrition they need.
We were the first westerners that these children had encountered which accounts for their somewhat nervous expressions. They soon overcame their shyness and were clamouring for me to take their pictures, which they will probably never see.
Good to see the school doing a great job.
Shame thet thay may never get to see the photographs.
Maybe you could send them a couple of prints.
I think the biggest challenge here was getting the exposure right. There's a lot that could have gone wrong. I find myself wishing that teacher wasn't merging into the background as much as he is.

Thanks R.G. I left the teacher that way deliberately because, sure as eggs is eggs, someone would have said he was a distraction ;-)

The chances of anything arriving there safely by post is pretty remote, as is the place.
Very nice captivating photo, Graham. Love how sharp their eyes are and they draw my attention into the photo.
The first thing(s) that grabs my attention in this photo are the eyes. At first, I noticed the contrast of the whites of their eyes against the darkness of the photo. Then I noticed that some of the children are looking at Graham, some are looking to their left, and one girl, is looking to her right. I wonder what she's looking at!!!
Don't shoot til you see the whites of their eyes" comes to mind. Great shot.
