I see where several stores are dropping the prices of XQD memory cards, some even are stating, "No longer available", "Factory discontinued", one even refunded an order with the factory discontinued caption when ordered on line. Does anyone on the HOG know what's going on?

That is odd because this a new technology that allows for greater speed. Are you sure you are not confused with the older SD cards?

B&H, Amazon have numerous offers w/o mention of being out of the manufacturer some even say 'more on the way' or something to that effect.

An observation: The price is dropping.

I understand all of what you say and yes I'm sure, I don't mean anything other than XQD, that's why I posted the question.

I would surmise that the race is on and new "models" are coming out. I've noticed prices dropping as well.

Could you attach a link or two? There are a few speed versions. Perhaps they are discontinuing the slower ones, which if I recall are not any faster than many CF cards, and slower than some. Additionally, some have very fast read speeds and much slower write speeds. Links to what is being discontinued will clear this up. I know that B&H shows some slower ones as being no longer available.

Many of the "on sale" or out-of-stock XQD cards are the older version 1 cards that are 1100X or 1333X speeds. The newer version 2 ones are faster and will be at least 2933X.
The price of XQD cards is falling overall now that Nikon has chosen them for the new D500 and D5 cameras as well as their D4 models. There are still only two manufacturers of the XQD technology, Sony and Lexar, but Delkin is investing into franchising the technology as well right now.

Any thoughts on XQD technology and capabilities vs the CFast cards that Canon is using?

Yes that's the reason, just new versions being released way before necessary. I found out from Lexar that the Sony produces the Reader that works with the older cards with read speeds below 1400x. I guess Lexar didn't produce readers for it's first generation XQD cards, I don't know. Anyway if you have a card with speeds of 1333x you should purchase the Sony MRW-E80 Reader or the Lexar Workflow XR2-for the newer XQD cards with 1400x or higher speeds.

The CF Fast cards are another new card designed to replace the CF cards, it is similar in size and quite expensive still. The XQD is much more compact in side and already a proven technology.
Both were developed for Professional video cameras and are trickling down to DSLRs as 4K video technology becomes more common in them.

Even though the XQD had been around for a while, I'm guessing it will take a while longer before market forces decide which format will be the new standard. Based on historic precedent, the fact that Sony is the developer of XQD is not a guaranty that format will prevail. Unfortunately when there are competing formats some early adopters of products that use them will eventually end up with the short end of the stick. It would have been better for everyone if Nikon and Canon had both selected the same format.

I really doubt that they are being discontinued. Both new Nikons (D5 and D500) are using the XQD cards.

The older, slower XQD cards are no longer available. I think this is what he saw.

Do you know if the various XQD's are cross compatible?
The new M class card is designed for the D5/D500. Will, f'rinstance the G class card designed for the D4, or others, be compatible with the D500?
