It is smaller and lighter than the D7200, the shutter is much quieter, the picture quality is very, very good, even in low light situations. It just has a nice, pleasant feel in my hands....and I have rather large hands, but it still feels "comfortable," and it is a Nikon! Plus, it has the articulating screen.

Very good answer.

Two thoughts:

1) you want to buy it just because you want to buy it. Nothing wrong with that! Go for it!

2) you need a back up camera. Nothing wrong with that, either. Go for it.

Okay! So I guess I am just saying, Go for it!

Do you use all the bells and whistles?
Buying this camera would be great as a second body.

I still shoot with 2 of them...and my 18-140 is practically welded to one of them...excellent camera.

I purchased a new D5200 a couple of years back. Great camera. For quickies and less weight, I have a P510 that I really like. Great photos from 2 great cameras!

I had a chance to purchase a refurbished Nikon D5100 for $250.00 (I presently shoot with the D7200). I am very impressed with the D5100, it seems to be an awesome camera. It does not have all the bells and whistles of the 7200, but, I like it. Any comments about the D5100 you would like to share?

I am not familiar with the D5100, but I have had in my hands the D5300. That camera has 24 megapixels, Wi-Fi capable, along with a swivel out LCD screen. This camera was earlier suggested to you. I don't know what you want to pay for another camera, but you can purchase now, the Nikon. refurbished D5300 at Nikon USA for $490.00. Good luck shopping.

I think your original statement sums up the situation. The D5100 is an excellent camera without some of the features of the d7000 series. I own both the D5100 and the D7100, and both are capable of capturing excellent images. The main difference for me is that I have more controls at my fingertips with the D7100 so that I don't have to go into the program to change settings when shooting manual, which is how I shoot most of the time. Of course the D7100 has a higher megapixel sensor than the D5100, but as I said, both are capable of capturing excellent images.

There is something here that I cannot understand. You have a camera that is a top amateur body with superior technology to what you want to buy. It seems to me that you are going backward instead of forward.
I do not own any of those two cameras but I am sure you know the D7200 is the best of the two. When it comes to taking pictures both will do a great job but the 7200 will outperform the 5100 every time in areas like AF where there is no contest.

For those that like the D5x00 series, how to you deal with lenses that front or back focus? Do you only buy Sigma dockable lenses (or now, "TAP-able" Tamrons)?

Personally, though I love Nikon dSLRs that accommodate AF fine tuning, I would much prefer a mirrorless CDAF camera over a dSLR that can't quite get the focus right.

the d5100 is a great camera if you have good light, but fails in low light, high ISO, situations.

I get great results with my D5100 at ISO 2000 and above inside European churches and other dark places. Most of the time I shoot at ISO 1000 indoors. I know that newer cameras have low noise at higher ISOs but I don't find may occasions when I need it.

I have the D5100 and the D5200. Both are lighter than the D7000 series cameras. The menus are easier to navigate and it does everything the D7000 series does. (that I need) Works well on long exposures (light painting), bracketing and night shots. I use it for candids at gatherings and while on vacation.

I'm very happy with these two cameras. I plan to keep them. Might get a second D5200 because the sensor is bigger than the 5100.

Oh, and by the way, my D5200 is bright red (matches my car) and I like it. I was told that no one would take me seriously using a red camera. I expect it might not get stolen as quickly as a big pro looking camera. I had a professional photographer turn up his nose at my red camera. His wife asked him why his cameras weren't as cool looking as mine. He got all huffy and left. Chuckled for a little bit (with the wife). Besides, no one can tell what color my camera is when I take a shot with it.

So enjoy your camera, make lots of beautiful photos!

My 5200 is bronze. All the lenses are black. Wish they made lenses to match the body!

Wow glad to get some good info on the 5100 you guys. I had my D7100, 50mm,55-300mm, 35mm,18-35 and flash stolen so am trying to replace camera on a limited budget. Sounds like I could make due with the 5100.

If you're looking for simplicity, I have a Nikon D40 (body only) I'm thinking of getting rid of for $100.
