Alabama passes law banning cities and towns from increasing minimum wage
State senate passes the legislation, which voids a Birmingham city ordinance attempting to raise the citys minimum wage to $10.10, on a 23-11 vote

Alabamas governor and legislature Thursday blocked Birminghams attempts to raise the citys minimum wage as they swiftly approved legislation to strip cities of their ability to set hourly pay requirements.
The Alabama senate passed the legislation on a 23-11 vote that largely broke along party lines. Governor Robert Bentley signed the bill into law about an hour later. The legislation voids a Birmingham city ordinance attempting to raise the citys minimum wage to $10.10, the citys legal department said Thursday afternoon.
Alabama has no state minimum wage and uses the federal minimum of $7.25. The federal minimum wage has been $7.25 an hour since July 2009. An American working full time 40 hours a week, 52 weeks a year at that wage would earn about $15,080 a year.

The minimum wage has nothing to do with being poor or stupid. Good for Alabama. There should never be a minimum wage. You get paid to what you are worth. If you do not want to work for that wage go somewhere else to get a job. Get an education or learn a skill, that is the American way to get ahead. Pioneers moved west for better opportunities, we can't move west, but today if you refuse to follow opportunities you will be in a depressed area and that is your choice. Even $15.00 is not a living wage in NYC or San Francisco. So let's all have a real living wage of $58.00 per hour. I could "Live" in NYC of San Francisco then and afford a house. Better yet I deserve a car and a house too so that should be provided as well as others have those things.
Only idiots, liberals and democrats who all absolutely hate America, freedom and what it stands for want the minimum wage.

Right on, Architect, especially the last line
Sorry- I should have said only in Alabama & the Attic ...
My mistake ...
Your opinion is common. Many people here agree with you. The idea of a working for less than 100th of a company's CEO is no reason to raise their wages, because obviously the CEO is worth so much more, not just as a person, but as a value to the company. Never mind that the underpaid worker will then need to apply for another job, and food stamps to feed their family. That is not the concern of the employer, it is the concern of the taxpayer that funds the food stamps... who ever that is.

We first have to see how the effects of rainsing the minimum wage will affect local small businesses. Big corps can take the hit better than mom and pops. Wal Mart closed a couple of stores here in LA where people could least afford the shut down.
The reason to me the fight over minimum wage is that there aren't a lot of well paying jobs to go around. An increase in manufacturing in the states would go a long way in alleviating that problem. Also stop letting so damn many people enter this country. A moratorium on immigration period would help.
Yes I am all for people leading a better life.
Minimum wage jobs are not meant to support a family.
They are commonly of a couple of types:
starting positions - to learn and then get promoted or not if you are worth it.
extremely low skill jobs that aren't worth more to the employer, you put in a minimum wage above what it is worth the employer just eliminates the job (other employees can fetch, clean, sweep or empty trash cans for themselves)
When I was a kid shop owners would often pay school kids a small amount to do things like sweep, pick up trash, sort soda bottles etc. The kids got some pocket money, the shop owner got something done that was not worth having an employee to do. Today in many areas those things are illegal, unless it is a family business and the kid is a member of the family.
Are there people who try to support a family on minimum wages? Yes, there are. Either because they lack skills for a higher paying job (they need to get those skills, some how, some way) or their old job was taken over by a machine (or some desperate person willing to work cheaper)(of course some were taken over by an illegal immigrant who thinks the wages are good compared to where (s)he came from and is sending the money home to support their family)
My students in East Los Angeles used to complain about how hard it was to find a summer/weekend job because the "wetbacks" took all the minimum wage jobs and lived in single rooms and people's garages packed like sardines and sending almost all their money out of the country. They thought the government should do something about it. And these were Hispanic kids.

Another total bullshit sound bite from the Billionaire funded right wing propaganda media.
What an utterly stupid excuse to keep the wage at poverty level, thus making it so the taxpayers have to make up the difference.
Here's a more logical assertion, robert. The taxpayers were never meant to support someone's family who is working full time and still can't make ends meet on poverty wages because corporations don't want to pay a fair wage.

Workers are never underpaid. They were not forced to take the job. They chose to work at the job. It is not the government's job to place a value on work. If the worker chooses to stay in the "miserable "job it is completely by choice or laziness. They can move, or get training. If a corporation chooses to pay the ceo a high salary then they believe it is worth it. If the ceo negotiates benefits it is because the corporation believes it is worth it. If an employee wants more become more valuable to the corporation or take that value elsewhere. That is exactly what the ceo did. He became a value to a different corporation and they hired him away from the previous corporation. Only democrats, liberals and government bureaucrats cannot comprehend this free market concept.

I love it how similar ALL religious dogmatic fundamentalists sound. Just change a few key words (God into "free market", evil into "government/liberals" ) and the rest of the dogmatic bullshit sounds pretty much the same. History can be re-written, facts made up and baseless assertions created to fit dogmatic beliefs. They are all the same.

Obviously you have no historical concept of American history and the principles it was founded upon. No religion behind what I say just the truth. Liberals and democrats who all hate America and what it stands for will resort to personal attacks because they know with a certainty that they are wrong. They can never intelligently argue the facts as they are totally devoid of a viable alternate to the truth.
