Had to buy a larger mm filter for a new lens, and ordered a Neutral Density filter by mistake instead of a CPL... Did I screw up ?

Maybe they will take it back... If you want to do long-exposure slooooow photographs, you will be all set!

A neutral density filter simply reduces the amount of light going into the camera. It will do nothing to reduce glare or enhance the image as a polarizer would.
The ND will come in handy for some applications though.

Neutral density filters are great for photographing waterfalls, streams, and all flowing water. You can slow down the shutter and give the water a smoothed out look. I use a 3-stop and a 4-stop ND filter for that. Which one did you get? You might want to keep it and have it in addition to a CPL.

Yes. It won't cut glare, just darken your shots.

No I do not think you screwed up. Keep it and order a CPL. Both will come in handy.

It won't darken your shots - but I understand that you are trying to say that it will let less light to the sensor. What it will do is it will allow you to use a slower shutter speed - to slow down moving water and things like headlights on moving cars at dusk, and/or it will allow you to use a wider lens opening to have better control over depth of field for selective focus applications.

Which ND filter did you get? I shot this with a 4-stop ND filter on the lens. I wouldn't get one of the variable ND filters though.

Absolutely, keep it. You will find use for it some day and will be glad you did.

Depending on the price, you may want to return it - if you think you won't use it very often.

Sometimes a screw up can be a good thing! As some have suggested, keep the ND and order the CPL. I use both (under appropriate conditions) and I am glad I have them!
