First responder was the most correct answer-it is a piece of ice that froze on top of a pond with a crystalline structure exactly like the long hexagonal crystals of Basalt. I found I could not light it to show it best properties, but it is enlarged about 4x. The ice was 3" thick, and that's how long the crystals are.
