GAS, look at renting a lens before buying, then check sites like B&H photo, Adorama, and others for used or refurbished. the lenses are great and you may save several hundreds of dollars by purchasing used.

Renting????? Really? To be truly afflicted by G.A.S., you gotta own it, not rent it. 8-)

Not afflicted with G.A.S. here. The only way I would rent a lens is for a once in a lifetime event. Otherwise its just wasting money IMHO. Research your "tools" then buy.
Truthfully I don't NEED any of my photo gear, but it keeps me happy.

When I started geting 'serious' about photography, 4 years ago, I found out I needed stuff I never knew existed. I won't bore you with a long list. It's a great hobby-have fun.

I don't know what your photographic needs are, or how perfectionistic you are....but a lot of us with the D800 are using the 28-300mm lens for an overall go to lens and are very happy with it. There are naysayers, but I've purchased both the 24-70 and the 70-200 and have yet to see how much greater these lenses are. I'm going to fine tune them to see if that makes a difference.

The lens you've purchased, though, is supposed to be an excellent lens.

Not that I set any standard of excellence, or even come close to it, but until now I've used only the 28-300mm lens (D800) and have been very happy. I did just purchase the 14-24 and am looking forward to seeing what I'm able to come up with. Just had both lenses 'calibrated' - the 28-300 was off a bit so perhaps I'll like it even better now!

I was told many years ago by an old timer that the only thing more expensive than photography was women...well maybe horse racing too.

Welcome to high tech. How about extra batteries and faster cards? I do like my D800

Have all that, uses the same batteries as my D7100.
