I have a Sony A7 with the kit 28-70mm, FE55mm and FE 28mm lenses. They are great lenses but none of these lenses does anything resembling close focusing. I don't need 1:1, but maybe 1:2 or 1:3 magnification. I had the new 90mm macro, but it was too much lens for my needs, heavy, difficult to focus properly-difficult to get a shot without a tripod. Looking for a lower cost alternative. Any ideas?
You could use extension tubes with the 28-70mm.
Your Sony A7 is a full frame mirrorless E-Mount camera of sound quality. In my opinion a 1:1 is true macro. 1:2 is one half the size of your subject. I am buying a 1:1 macro lens soon. Not cheap either. I would recommend extension tubes as someone else suggested, since your intent is not to spend a lot of money. You can purchase a 2 tube extension set for Sony E-Mount only. Which is what you have. B&H extension tube by Vello, EXT-SFED. $82.50. Consider other suggestions too.
Thank-you, I think I'll give them a try
Try the Sigma 2.8 80mm E mount
Another idea is a Hoya 49 mm +10D closeup lens. It can be used with or without the extension tubes. I recently bought it for my A7Rii to be used with my FE1.8/55. I bought a cheaper set of extension tubes. The quality isn't great, but I saw negative comments in the reviews of more expensive tubes. I had considered the Sony 90mm macro, but it is pretty large and heavy. I am planning to get a Zeiss Batis 85mm for portraits after the street price comes down. The Hoya 49mm macro is available at B&H for $79.95.
I got a Sigma 50mm macro from KEH. Minolta mount. Good price and it is a great lens.
Thanks for the tip, I am using extension tube now and they work great.
