25mm extension tube, tripod, and if those suckers are RED ants, as in FIRE ANTS, find a flower to shoot.
Fire ants will change your whole day

Maybe tell an Ant joke?.get them to slow down and smile........

What about capturing a few, cool them off in the freezer to slow them down and then put them on something sticky, then you'd stand a chance of getting closer??

YES - You can do that with all kinds of insects - I did it with scorpions & spiders - - into a jar & into the freezer - then pose them as you want them -

The rocks seem to overwhelm the photo and it is hard to see the ants...I would follow them and wait until they were more in the open and less distraction with other elements.

Use bigger ants and if willing use the uncles as well.

A bit difficult to see the ants. You said you used a 50mm lens,I am curious. Did you use a 50mm prime lens, and with the 1.6 factor make it a 90mm and you shot it from 20 feet away? I like to get close ups on occasion so I am asking for a little more information.

If you are using Canon go to the awb button then select close up function. I use this all the time for good close ups.

The 50mm isn't designed as a "close up lens" at all as you can see.

I've tried it :(

To improve this get a macro lens if this is what you're interested in or just get a lens that will 'close up focus"

Not EXACTLY on this topic but I'll mention it...learn what each of your lenses does well, and then "play to their strengths" and that way you'll will get better results.

No, these are not fire ants. I know what they look like, They are quick. Like the rest said put some in a jar and into the freezer, good idea.
BTW, fire ants are about 1/2 the size of these. They have a mound around their hole, sometimes it's a foot or so tall. But most of the time it's little. Mess with that and a red tide of ants by the thousandssssss will come swarming out to get you. They bite at on end and sting with the other and it feels like they are stabbing you with fire. Get about ten of them on your foot and you do some fancy brushing and dancing.
