Terje I see so many wonderful ideas here I think you need to schedule more time or an additional visit. 😄 I haven't read every single post but Central Park is a must. Off the beaten path is Gantry Plaza Park for spectacular views of the city. There is a ferry between manahattan and the park which is on the East River in Long Island City. Google it. I also highly recommend Brooklyn Bridge Park.

In New Jersey you can visit Liberty State Park which offers a unique memorial to 9/11 and lovely views of Manhattan.

Wherever you wind up going you will be sure to encounter interesting and colorful people who should be encorporated to enhance you photographic experience .

i don't know where you're staying, but consider traveling time. You can exhaust yourself with busses trains etc How would you get to Liberty State Park in NJ, if you're staying in Manhattan. How long would it take to get there? Better to see 'THE 9/11 Memorial'. Going to the Brooklyn Bridge, the Cloisters-they aren't too difficult to get to and are unique and worth seeing.
Ask yourself do you need to come to NYC to go to the zoo or see a botanic garden?

I'm a native New Yorker...and believe me i still haven't seen it all ..just go and enjoy yourself..there is a photoshoot everywhere you go there..never ending sites ..it is an eclectic city with so many opportunities that no matter what you do you will enjoy it..take advantage of the FREE stuff..don't set yourself up to pay out big money when there is so much to see just walking around ..do not let anyone make you pay out for photos ..such at the ones in times square..the ferry is free..anything that says "suggested donation" don't pay the full price ..make an offer instead for less money..the cloisters are amazing..the parks and the surroundings up there are a site not to be missed..you will be so high up on the mountain above the hudson river...be careful not to take photos of kids in parks..many of the parent and nannies are very protective there ..i never take photos of children in the city..it isn't as carefree as it is in many other trusting areas..believe me ..you will not go back home feeling disappointed in what you do end up shooting..and be sure you will eventually want to go back ..many have told me that NYC is addictive ..and i myself never tire of it..in fact i started a goal to see all of manhattan from top to bottom ..have fun...be careful..dont look too much like a tourist ...and watch your stuff ..it isn't as bad as you think as far as safety..but it still is a big city .

i heard that the 11sep memorial had an $18 admission charge... not so much Mahattan, but an elevated ride on the subway (L) thru Bkln to COney Island not too shabby...

There is a beautiful 911 memorial across the river in Bayonne, NJ that is free and inspiring especially now with the freedom tower when looking through it.

Many NJ towns have 911 memorials, but the place to go and see is the one in NYC where it happened. There is no charge to see the memorial and walk around the plaza. (There is a charge for the museum. I found it worth the money.)

We have a 911 memorial on, Post Cards, it contains the profiles of the Staten Islanders who died in 911, located a short walk from the ferry terminal, just down the boardwalk, a short bus ride away is a Fireman's Memorial located in Sailors Snug Harbor, a historic site loaded with classic buildings, now a city park . All free

The significance of the Bayonne one is it is just across the river and it is not a community monument but a large one built by the Russian government and as stated frames the freedom tower. It was built before the tower and previously framed the empty space. So no it is not some little local monument it has all the names and other things. It also gives a perspective of the ground zero site that is incredibly photogenic. Also as the OP stated it is not over run by tourists and will provide photos unique from the run of the mill site photos that every other tourist takes. They will actually have something different yet still powerful.

The 911 memorial in NYC wasn't "over run by tourists' My opportunities for photos were 'not run of the mill' at the memorial. The feelings that going the 911 memorial are unlike any feeling you'll get in Bayonne. How can anyone be in NYC and go to a 911 memorial in NJ while not visiting THE 911 MEMORIAL.

What ever. It is unique off the beaten path and what the OP wanted from the other obvious.

FYI groupon has a discount for the 911 memorial museum or as it's call the 911 tribute center.

Did B&H move? They used to be around Penn Central Station (34th St and (9th Ave.) near Madison Square Garden.
Sorry-didn't realize that this was covered. But you should go there and be overwhelmed!

So me and my wife will celebrate her 40th birthday in New York this September. We will stay for a week.
It is our first time there so I was wondering if there are any must see places(for photography). Not talking about all the obvious places, such as the Statue, Empire state building, Central Park and so on.
Maybe a stupid question but I really want to get the most out of our trip and my photography there :)

Thank you so much in advance.

Terje

You can spend days in just Central Park alone. If you want to take tourist style picture postcards, hit all of the tourist sites.

Get yourself a copy of the AIA Guide to NY - it has a number of points of interest, from an architectural/historical point of view

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B003OIB8BU/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?ie=UTF8&btkr=1

Lower East Side on Sunday morning - Orthodox-owned clothing shops, which are closed on Saturday, are all open on Sunday - Orchard St below Delancey St is the main drag there. You get Bialy's at Kossar's on Grand St.

Chinatown - always something going on there - some restaurants are still open at 3 AM.

Lower Manhattan/Financial District/Freedom Tower Plaza and Sept 11th Memorial - but if you are there for Sept 11, it's best to see it from Dumbo (Brooklyn, stands for Down Under Manhattan Bridge Overpass), or from Jersey City.
Tribeca
Meat Packing District (Gansevoort Market at 14th St and Washington)
East Village/St Marks Place -
Washington Sq Park and neighboring area

Soho/Cast Iron District - pricey, but once the main area for artists living and working in cheap loft spaces - the 1%'ers found it and totally gentrified it. Gone are the $45/mo leases for a space with a sink, maybe a bathroom, and no other amenities. Interesting area with most spaces going for multiple millions. Many buildings were built with cast iron columns.

Central Park, Riverside Park, numerous public open spaces in and around large office and residential towers in Midtown, etc.

The High Line
Highbridge
Spanish Harlem

And this is just one borough of 5. Send me a PM about what you are looking for and I will try and be more helpful.

I have lived in and near this city for 64 yrs. Born in the Bronx. :)
