Since we seem to be doing Computer support on the forum, do you know the precise reasons why your Win 8.1 machine will not upgrade? There should be a fix for a machine that is not very old...
If you're not sure, why not post us the details / error messages etc., someone here may be able to help...

Particularly since, without our computers, our photography would be dead in the water.

It was originally in the main photography section and was moved to chit-chat. Admin does a lot of that kind of stuff, sometimes it makes sense, sometimes it doesn't. Somethings that should be moved do not get moved.

The most common reason I find when upgrading laptops and desktop PC's from Windows 8.1 to 10 is a failure to install all of the critical Windows 8.1 updates before proceeding to the Windows 10 update. Look at the update history and install the failed Critical updates. Not all the updates just the critical ones before proceeding with a Windows 10 install. If that fails:
The second most common reason is a conflict with the Windows update cache. Do the following:
The first step is to temporarily turn off the Windows Update service (to stop background downloads). Open the Command Prompt, type the "net stop wuauserv" command (not the quotes) and press Enter.
Next, open the File Explorer, go to View > Folder Options and enable the display of hidden files and folders.
Once done, navigate to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download and then delete the contents of the Download folder.
Open a new Command prompt window and run the "net start wuauserv" (type just the command not the quotes and hit enter) command to restart the Windows Update service.
Reboot and proceed with the Windows 10 download and install.
There are other causes for Windows 8.1 to 10 in place upgrade but these are by far the most common I encounter.

Nothing. But it is in: "General Chit-Chat (non-photography talk)". Just don't be like a baby.
Similar thing happened to me. I brought the laptop to the Microsoft store and they installed Windows 10 (free). Works fine.
