Need help and information:
I purchased a Nikon 7100 about a year ago and understand very little about firmware and program updates for cameras
What I need to know is this:
Is it necessary or mandatory to upgrade to the latest firmware and / or program updates for your camera What do I miss by not doing it
If I should do it ... how is it done
Thanks to everyone

If you want your camera to perform to the best of its ability, yes you should update the firmware.

As an aside, there may be some system fix within that update. I can't say for certain that there is, or not.

The upgrade is quite simple. I'd check out the Nikon web site nikonusa.com and look for the step by step instructions on updating your firmware.

My D7100 worked fine before I updated the firmware and worked the same after the update. If you want to do in camera corrections for a newer lens, then the update may be required.

You can check to see if any of the firmware changes affect you at the Nikon web site. If not, then you don't have to update.

There may be a new update for the D7100 that you don't have.

There is a firmware update for my Nikon I went in and looked at what it was going to do. Changes really had nothing to do with me, a few small things I didnt care about so I didnt update mine.

Now that you mentioned it Im going to check and see if there is another update.

Maybe you could haggle with Nikon and they'll drop the price of the free upgrade.....

Actually I think I need one for the D7000 as well. I'll try. I'll see if it pertains to me.

I agree. My D7100 is fine. I looked at the fixes and decided that they didn't pertain to the way I use the camera. Look and then decide for yourself.

No you don't have to update firmware especially if every thing seems to be working.

But if you want the best performance, at times updated features or fixes (fixes not always acknowledged) and resale value, do the update.

Its so simple anyone can do it, just follow the instructions.

The Nikon D7000 has a firmware update released in August 2014. Not aware what it corrects.

If you click on the link that Bill de posted you will see links to view the changes to your camera with the new software.

My view on any software up grade is: check out what the software changes or 'fixes'. If the changes affect me, I upgrade. If the changes don't affect me, or I'm not 100% sure what they do, I don't upgrade. Personally, I'm always leery of upgrading just for the sake of upgrading.

I always upgrade my firmware because there can be minor changes that improve the camera's operation/ Never had a problem bu upgrading
