Question for Sigma 150-600 "Sport" owners

For those of you that own the Sigma 150-600 Sport, I was wondering if anyone has seen a need or desire to fine tune the focus a various focal lengths? I haven't really heard any complaints or concerns right out of the box...so far.

I have however, heard of people being extremely pleased with the IQ performance with no adjustments, then got the USB dock, spent some time adjusting and was even more excited with the results. Most seem to think it outstanding straight from the box.

Has any of you Sport "owners" found this to be true?

It is a wonderful lens and the tuning ability makes it almost perfect. I have tuned mine at multiple focal lengths and it needed very little adjustment anywhere, just minor tweaking. It's really nice to have that capability available to the user. More manufacturers need to offer it.

I found it true for mine. The only thing that I have done with the dock so far is update the firmware.

I have the sport but not invested in the dock yet. Not clear what it will do for me.

Do you have the latest firmware update released in Sept 2015?

Good Question Joe. I do not know if it came with the latest update. Now that might be a good reason to get the dock. Have you done anything else with the dock?

I found quite a bit of info on You Tube and other sources, but briefly, from memory and I may miss some things or got some of it "not quite right"......

Primes have four areas of focus tuning, zooms turn to something like twelve and more on bigger Teles.
Focus speed can be adjusted.
Focus limiter can be customized.
OS can be customized.
Two customized programs can be stored in the lens.
And of course updates.

I'm sure I've missed something but, you get the idea ;)

Yes. I have tuned for various focal lengths AND distances. Distance seems to be the biggest issue.

The tuning at distance is just more critical, because the DOF gets so shallow at long focal lengths. From 400mm out proper focus is pretty critical, especially if you want to shoot a lens wide open.

This is the area I am most interested in getting dialed in. I hope to find time to do some testing this weekend. I have only played with my new Sport for a few minutes but, I can see that there is little doubt I am going to love this lens  :-)

I have used it to customize the OS and focus speed. All you have to do is call Sigma and give them the serial #, and they can tell you if it needs a firmware update. Their customer service is excellent.

It also seems much more difficult to do. This lens seems EXTREMELY sensitive to distance and not as much to focal length.

Bill, Thank You very much for the research. It looks like it is wise investment in the dock. Have a great weekend.

I have only used mine to update the firmware but plan on getting more into it now that I have some time to work with it. I can see where the dock will be a great tool.

It is now a no brainer at the price. Just ordered one from B&H. Thanks for your thoughts on the subject
