I am happy being an amateur, that way if I stuff up it doesnt matter to anyone except me. Imagine calling yourself a professional and then taking naff shots, dont think someone paying would be very happy!

I am a rank amateur as a photographer. I am also a lousy chessplayer, ship
model maker, and telescope maker. I feel it is better to be all of the above
than be an expert TV watcher. I am a professional Tool and Die Maker

I've been working with my camera for a little over three years and have added a couple new lenses, a flash, tripod, remote but I certainly don't consider myself a professional by any means. I have done senior and family portraits for a few who trust me to do a good job and so far I'm happy with just that. I turned down a wedding shoot and why? I don't want the pressure and when it starts to become a "job" that's when it won't be fun for me any more. I'm happy being what I am...a photo enthusiast who has found happiness in a hobby that I am getting to master a little more each day.

I'm not proud to be an amateur. I'm proud of some of the photos I take, and of the results I get when I convert an ordinary shot into something worth looking at in PHotoshop. In my professional work, I've always taken pride in getting consistent high quality results, and the effort I've put into it. If I were a professional photographer, I'd try to take the same pride in my work.

. . . there really is not a dividing line between being an amateur or what you would call a pro photographer on this site. I think everyone on here except for maybe a few that have big ego's are on here because they are proud if you want to use that word to be on a site with other people that are enthusiastic about sharing there images with other photographers because we have a common bond of sharing good photography.

Exactly! This is why I often refer to myself as a 'paid amateur'. I want to help other amateurs whether they're paid or not, because I've had a lot of pleasure out of photography for 45+ years and I'd like others to extract as much pleasure or more. That's why my website is free. Of course I'd like some money, and I earn some from photo magazines, books and e-books, as in http://www.rogerandfrances.com/e-books.html but that's only part of why I do it. I have a law degree and am a qualified secondary school teacher but photography is more fun even if it doesn't pay as well. It doesn't even pay as much as teaching, for most of us.

Cheers,

R.

I like to shoot pictures and I don't think I'm either a pro or amateur. Always learning and don't see the light at the end of that tunnel so I guess in that regard I'll always be a amateur. If I ever thought I could make a living at it I think it would start to take the fun out of it. Two friends who are pros and starving..........

Well, after reading so many of these that make tons of sense, I would like to adjust my answer. What I mean was, as a paid Artist (brush and paint type) I want to retire and just paint what I want to. If someone buys them OK. At least I painted what I WANTED to paint. It was fun, not a JOB. As a person behind a camera, I want the same thing. Shoot the pictures I WANT to shoot, print (frame or not) and if they sell OK, if not, I'm still happy. It was fun, not work.

Maybe I say this because I am an amateur, but I prefer to think that an amateur takes photos because they want to, enjoy doing so and use it as a way to express their creativity. A true professional who makes their living taking photos does so because they have to, in order to feed their family.

I'm not saying a pro can't or doesn't enjoy taking photos on their own time or can't be creative, but I would think that shooting 3-5 weddings per week of strangers would be repetitious and get rather mundane after a while. Or eventually one squalling kid would start looking pretty much like the next squalling kid. Most often, creativity is a God given talent and certainly something to be proud of. But when shooting stuff like weddings or kids, you can only use so much creativity when the subjects and settings are always the same. And with wedding photos, people usually expect some of the images to be the ordinary, run of the mill ones like slipping the ring on the finger, kissing the bride, the whole family lined up like they're preparing for an execution, the kids throwing flower petals and so on. Sure, one must get those images because those moments are very important to the customer, but they probably get excrutiatingly boring for the photographer. And you can only get so many photos of cousin Bob drunk off his butt and hitting on the bride's sister.

That's why I proudly tell people that I am an amateur photographer. And just my opinion as well. As you know, opinions are like rear ends, everyone has one.

Does this mean that a professional house exterior painter can't relax on Sunday afternoon and paint a creative portrait or landscape on canvas? Does this mean a professional plumber can't relax on Sunday afternoon and create a piece of art out of spare copper pipes bent to be the shapes of human arms and legs? Does this mean someone who works on a car assemble line in Detroit can't race drag cars on Sunday at Milan Dragway? Does playing in a band 5 nights a week doing Top 40 hits over and over mean that the players are no longer able or desiring to write original songs? Does a professional photographer pack his camera equipment away and not take one on vacation with him?

I don't believe that being a professional in something has to negate or eliminate your ability or desire to be creative on your own in your own time after the professional part of life is out of the way.

So I'm not proud to be an amateur. I'd rather be a professional (pride in doing something others would like to do as an occupation but haven't, can't, or never will) who has a creative streak for his private pleasure as well (even more pride stacked on top for being able to show excellent creative work).

Absolutely no shame in being an amateur all pros start out that way. But pros love the art to, There is nothing better than getting paid for what you love to do and would be doing for free in free time.

"proud to be an American where at least I know I'm free..." can not come close to how Lee Greenwood said it. God Bless the USA

Not sure if I'm proud, but i do enjoy being an amateur. I take pictures when I want, of what I want and don't need to worry about anyone's opinion (except my wife). I suppose I'm proud when someone likes my work (work might be an oxymoron for an amateur).

I am a amateur, but like the sound of being a professional photographer. I would be getting paid for doing what I love! But as in all jobs, there are ups and downs, good and bad projects. I would think that the professionals chose to be because they love photography and are really good at what they do. Or people would not pay for their services. However, professional photographers are far between in their abilities. I like to think of myself as a "professional amateur" - I photograph whatever pleases me, almost daily. I have photography on my mind all day long (I'm retired and can do that). But, do I wish I could make a supplemental income from doing this, well "yes, I do." But, I don't want to do weddings and tie up my weekends. I did it a time or two about 30 years ago for friends and that was it for me. I hated the final process of compiling the images for the Client/friends to purchase. And honestly, a couple of times, I gave them the lab name and rolls of film and said for them to take care of it. I've done a few retirement parties, etc. That's when I used to do film photography. So, I only got paid for the wedding shots- which is my favorite part! It was kind of cool, but I prefer to shoot for me. Nice thread thanks for posting. Cheryl 8-)
