Bring a couple of extra batteries for the Sony A6000. I hear they drain fast!

That's true, out of all my cameras over the years, only one dropped to the cement because the strap broke. The battery door would no longer close, so we just used a rubber band for the rest of the trip.

About the only souvenir I ever buy is a spoon to add to my collection at home...small & inexpensive. Pictures will be the best souvenir and the best ones will have us in them!!

I've got the wet weather covered. Jackets for us, "raincoat" for the camera. We'll dress in layers and try not to stand out as tourists!!

Actually, my husband is the reason I've gotten so paranoid. He worries about absolutely everything. I always tell him it's a waste of energy and useless to worry so much. He worried that the Chrysler plant he worked at was going to close the entire 40 years that he worked there. He's been retired for over 12 years and the plant is still open. He never leaves the house with anything running or on (coffee pot, dishwasher, etc) and always closes and locks all the windows and doors. I often walk the dog and leave the house completely open. And, yes, we are somewhat paranoid anywhere we go. Even when we go out to dinner and leave the dog in the car, my husband thinks someone will steal him ('cause he's so cute...the perfect-sized dog and good as gold). So, you see, he needs this vacation and I hope to teach him to relax but I also want to heed some of his warnings and have a safe & happy trip.

I'll be doing all the driving because he is 75 and I read that you can't rent a car overseas if you are 75 or older. Then, HE can relax and enjoy the scenery. I just have to remember to drive on the wrong side of the road!!

I still want to download my pictures onto something so I have a backup copy. If I don't take a computer, what do YOU suggest?

Before renting a car in the U.K. make sure you can drive stick shift, or specify Automatic. You do not put Petrol(gasoline) in a Diesel car. Make sure you go around the Dingle coastline in Ireland. It's beautiful.Enjoy,
Ray.

In addition to the suggestion above re backing up your photographs you may want to consider this (the prices are in Australian $$ on the site - the video is in $US):

Keep in mind if you want to review images on a TV screen the "TV standards" may be very different to what they are at home.

-------------
One tip when renting a car (and this is from personal experience whilst on vacation in North America), pay a bit extra for a SatNav, they can make life a lot easier.

------------------
Re standing out as Americans - do not wear similar clothes, like the same spray jackets or matching denim outfits etc
Here are two examples. Look at the couple on the left in the second example.
In addition to the suggestion above re backing up ... (show quote)

I would'nt even mention I was American. Just something I was told before going to Ireland.

Hmmmmm. We were told just the opposite. Our experience confirmed that.

I can see where you are getting the wrong information by reading McLean's Magazine. :D
Actually, Scotland has a higher violent crime rate than Northern Ireland and Glasgow and London have higher rates than Belfast. If we were worried about violent crime, tourism would die in the US. (No pun intended)

Don't forget the adapters for the plugs.

I've never had a card fail either. One advantage to taking the D7100 is the ability to write to two cards, either as backup or overflow. We do have a backpack that we will probably use as a carry on. I have a Pelican case, too; but I pretty much ruled it out as a carry on due to it's weight.

I had a separate SD card for each country. England, Wales, Ireland.Did not go to Scotland or Northern Ireland.
Don't forget the different currency's.

We're only renting a car in Ireland, and I specified an automatic, even though I can drive a stick shift, I thought it might be wierd from the wrong side of the car. We will be in Dingle near the end of our trip. Thank you.

We won't be getting to Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland. 1 euro = $1.09 the last I checked. English money is a little less straight forward. I'll just make a conversion chart for both. Thanks for the reminder.

Sounds like a good combo. I was considering an 18-200 for the D7100. I have heard that it is better than the 18-300.

I took this picture of the Irish(Dingle) coastline with a Canon 60D and a Sigma 18-250mm lens. I also took a Sigma 10-20mm lens.

LOL. If you're sitting on the "wrong side" of the car, you're in the passenger seat. They do not drive on the wrong side of the road either, they drive on the left-hand side of the road.

My wife and I are back from a 2-1/2 week trip to Ireland just in September. Took my trusty Canon 70D with 18-135 everywhere lens + prime 24mm and 55-250 used once.. Backup in case it broke with Nikon (!) P&S. No problems -- except with Gateway Netbook (!!) when charger broke. Had to manage e-mail with my Tracfone (!!!) el cheapo phone. Came back with 1500+ photos (!!!!) edited on return. Took me until mid-December to finish post processing (ugh!). Felt no problems re crime and we're from a relatively high crime area in the US of A so we're not naive. You are fortunate that you can drive there. My wife and I are too old (!!!!!) to rent car there. Did well on a tour and then on our own using bus and taxi. Relax and enjoy (!!!!!!).

Very nice pictures. I know that we will probably have at least 2,000 pics. That's about how many I had from Hawaii and I stayed up all night picking out the best 60 before I edited any of them.

Only I can drive while there...I will be 67 by the time we go. I believe they charge more if you are 70 & won't rent to you if you are75. I considered a bus tour but I think we will like the freedom of driving instead.

Thanks for your input.
