If I don't need a notebook or a tablet I won't be bringing one. I just want a way to backup my photos, so an external hard drive with a card slot will work. I already have extra cards which are probably bigger than they should be...32 gigabytes. Just got an adaptor for charging the camera batteries. I also read that batterirs cannot be carried lose in either carry-on or checked baggage due to possible fire hazard.

We probably won't use our phones over there...I could care less about emails; but it was suggested to buy a burner phone when we get there for local calls. I will bring my small Kindle, though, for reading on the plane, plus it's my "sleeping pill"!! I have an Ireland guide book to review on the plane, too. I will have already read it by the time we go.

I don't plan to spend a lot of time in our room...that's just for sleeping. We are staying at the Dromoland castle for one night, so I am looking forward to that.

I know 3 cameras were mentioned but we definitely won't be taking all 3, just the little Sony & 35mm f/1.8 lens & one of the DSLRs with 1 or 2 lenses (either the 18-300 or 18-140 and the Tokina 10-16).

Our coats will have lots of pockets for small things I want to carry with me and the camera stuff will be in my Kelly Moore bag...no purse needed. My husband will have the backpack for use as a carry-on; but I don't plan to use it for sightseeing.

Hi one of the major employers in cork is apple, I have never known anybody here who hasn't a computer not everybody has photoshop and not every computer has a sd card slot but just about every town has a dollar/pound store/ euro store. which stock usb sd card readers. I can't imagine any B&B owner who wouldn't have a computer or 3 who wouldn't let a guest transfer their sd card to a portable hard drive. Most electrical stores carry portable hard drives.

Just about everywhere has cell phone coverage. you might see the odd pony and trap (sulky) around but that's because the travellers like to race them and bet on the result.

e.g

5 travellers got jailed for that one.

We have travelled in The Irish Republic but it was back in our film days so many of the considerations you need to make were not necessary. I am writing to tell you that at least ...back in the day... Ireland is filled with friendly , considerate and interesting people. It semed that many had relatives in the USA and we had many inquiries about "...my uncle Sean, he lives in Chicago". They had no concept of the size of the USA. We never worried about our camera equipment while traveling there.

The Irish Republic may be "filled with friendly...people" but Northern Ireland and the Troubles?

We had no difficulty in Northern Ireland this year when we were on our own there and even on our tour. Troubles are over -- for now. :-D

Some suggestions.
#1 Do not take a computer - More to carry , including power supplies card readers and cables.
Just another thing to worry about, including getting stolen.
Review you pictures when you get home.
As far as doing some light editing while on the road, forget it. Help your partner with the navigation or look at the scenery
Of an evening do you want to stuck in a room by yourself, editing pictures, whilst your partner is enjoying the local night life wether it be a pub, show (or opera) or a resteraunt?

#2 The less stuff you have with you the less you have to worry about it being stolen. Just have a good insurance policy.

#3 If "stuff" is important to you (like meds) keep it close to your heart - do not put it in baggage that may be lost in transit

#4 If you drop your camera then buy a P&S (or have another one with you)
When was the last time you dropped a camera or had it stolen? If you were vacationing in the USA would you be so paranoid?

#5 Re your packing - do not forget to take wet weather gear

#6 Re - souvenirs - your memories and your photographs are the real souvenirs not more possesions.

On vacations like this a lot of possesions are just a burden.

Enjoy your vacation.

Yes, I remember all the advice from my other post. I have acquired the Sony camera since then when I was asking which lenses to bring. This time I mostly want to know how is the best way to back up my photos.

Did Ireland with a D7100 and the nikon 10-20 and 18-200, got it all with this COMBO.

Sounds like a good combo. I was considering an 18-200 for the D7100. I have heard that it is better than the 18-300.

Northern Ireland is also filled with many friendly people and after travelling extensively in the North this year, I saw no signs of "active" trouble. Northern Ireland needs tourism to help move it forward after a very long history of unrest. Any people I met were more than accommodating to my inquiries. Derry, Belfast, Giant's Causeway and everywhere in between have incredible opportunities for a photo enthusiast.

Remember the crop factor of the 7100 is 1.3 (or more -- check it out) so that the 18-200 lens acts like a 23.4-260mm lens. In my experience that provides more than enough breadth at the low end and reach at the high end.

Gee. What a mistake I made. Used only one SD card in my camera for the whole trip but carried another just in case. And I don't remember carrying extra batteries on board in my camera case with my camera.

To me it only depends on where you are going. Anywhere in the EU or other developed countries and I could replace anything immediately. To Africa, South America and parts of Asia I'd take more backup because of the way I travel it's harder to get replacements and electricity is intermittent at best. She's going to Ireland so I wouldn't worry but she listed it as a concern.

Can you use the Kingston Mobilelite to move images directly from a camera SD card to the hard drive? Do you need something to control it e.g. Ipad or smartphone?

MobileLite has an SD and a USB slot. You need a free iPhone/Android app to control it via WiFi. The MobileLite has an internal battery to power the hard drive.
Procedure: Plug SD card and hard drive/USB flash drive into MobileLite. (You need a USB cabel to connect drive to MobileLite.) Using iPhone/Android app, select source SD card (or hard drive). Select destination (e.g. Hard Drive & folder). Select move or copy. Select file(s) to move/copy. Watch iPhone app to see progress. I always copy so the original remains on the SD card.
For me, the MobileLite has enough juice to power my small external hard drives. If not, you may be able to use a USB "Y" connector (e.g. 0.5 Meter (21" ) USB 3.0 Micro-B to dual USB 3.0 cable—Auxiliary USB "Y" cable (OWCUSB3AYMBPB) from MacSales.com , $10 and power the drive from another external source.
The MobileLite has other unrelated features: 1. You could use its internal battery to charge an iPhone. 2. Hard-wire connect to a hotel's Internet connection to create a wireless hotspot.
It takes a bit of practice at first. Sounds more complicated that it is.

Trivia: If a camera uses a CF or XQD card, life is a bit more complicated. It takes two steps since both a CF/XQD card reader/USB Flash Drive/Hard Drive must share the only USB port. 1. Transfer photos from the CF/XQD card to a spare SD card, which is in the MobileLite. After transfer, connect the hard drive to the USB port. Transfer from SD card to hard drive.

I just have to remember to drive on the wrong side of the road!!

Of all the things I've read on this thread, this is by far the one that could get you into big trouble. (I don't mean with the police- once they know you're not drunk, they'll just laugh.) It is SO EASY to turn onto the wrong side when you pull away from a filling station on a country road. And be careful when you get back home too.

Been there , done that for 3 weeks, driving , B & B' the whole bit. Ireland is pretty safe except for the roads. You can rip a tire in a heart beat on some of the back roads, pot holes galore. Their highways are not like our highways. Equipment wise, i took my Nikon, a 70-200 af-s, VR and a 2x extender. Took my iPad to download every night and that forces you to get rid of the junk shots. Relax, do not anticipate trouble and have a ball it is a wonderful country. Throw in a digital point and shoot as backup in case of main camera failure . Take several sd cards That's it!! Clothes nothing fancy, something you can wash out at night that will dry by morning.
