For years I have tried to find the type of gloves my father used when hunting in order to keep my hands and fingers warm. They had an index finger with a hole in it to stick your finger out of when pulling the trigger. I wanted similar when taking pictures in winter, particularly Christmas lights.

At last my cries have been heard: both B&H and Amazon have "shooting gloves". I think B&H has a better selection. I bought a pair. They have the necessary index finger opening but on both hands to accommodate left handers. They also have magnets in the hands to help holding metal cameras or other equipment.

I was unaware that cameras had any ferromagnetic material in them, at least enough to work with magnets.

Magnets won't do you any good for holding a camera or lens, since aluminum, magnesium, and plastic are the primary materials used. Those magnets could produce interesting results when handling your SD or CF cards though.

I have a couple different photo gloves - one with magnets and one without. The ones with the magnets have fingertips that you can pull off your index finger and thumb. The magnets keep the flaps out of the way as you shoot, they don't help you hold the gear.

Used old gloves and a pair of sissors to cut off gloves.

Brown Jersey gloves with the finger tips cut off...local lumber yards usually carry them. Even with 2 pair on if needed, ya still have the dexterity required.

I did the same thing Doug.:) Only with leather ones. Cut the finger and thumb off. If I get to cold, I go home or to the truck to get warm. I need warm gloves for me feet now.:):)

I bought mine at Rocky Boots a few years ago, they are hunting mittens that the entire mitten slips back to reveal thin gloves underneath that enables me to set any controls so my fingers are always covered, there is a zippered pouch on the top to install the small hand warmer packs. I've been out all day below zero with no problem in any way. After I shoot I pull the mittens back over to keep warm till the next stop of my hike.

I bought a pair of these gloves at Ken's Camera shop in Montreal a couple months ago and that is exactly what those magnets do. However, we've not had cold enough weather here in Maine this year to justify trying out the gloves - but I suspect the opportunity will arise soon enough. The gloves I got seem plenty roomy and I'm more worried that they may be a little too loose.

Thought about leather, but the Jersey's I buy for work (GC) by the case so they cost me about $.80 a pair. To keep my feet warm, either...
