Dear UHHers,
Please advise:
I am planning to drive from Winnipeg, Canada to Los Angeles in April/May next year. What is the best rout to take if I want to drive through Yellowstone National Park and do some wildlife photography.
After meeting my friends, I plan to drive with them from San Francisco to Las Vegas, driving through Yellowstone National Park. What rout should I take?
Where should I/we stop for meals/gas and spend a night?
Thank you.

Road Atlas, state highway maps, MapQuest. Bing maps Google maps. Might be a good idea to get all the tourist info from the park, state and federal.

There's a UHH member who has a camera store near Yellowstone and goes there quite often. He could help you but I can't think of his name offhand.

Ummm, after your initial drive through Yellowstone NP in Wyoming and meeting friends in San Fransisco you plan on traveling from California back to Yellowstone in Wyoming and then back to Nevada?? Or did you mean to say Yosemite NP in California, which makes much more sense.

Regardless of your plans, others have suggested CAA, the Canadian equivalent of AAA, and that is the best advice you can get. They can cover every need and want you can contrive and allow you to do it in the most economical manner not to mention the safest.

Thanks Coot. Mogul gave the OP his name. I had a senior moment there.

The only entrance open year round is the north entrance. The other entrances typically open when the snow is cleared sometime in May. The dates vary and are updated frequently. Here is a good link.

One of the most beautiful drives in the intermountain west is from Yellowstone/Jackson Hole/Star Valley/Snake River Canyon/Bear Lake/Logan Canon/Logan Utah/Sardine Canon to Brigham City/ before entering the boredom of interstate USA.

One other thing. Wild animals are dangerous, follow park rules. Give the animals plenty of room. You don't want to be one of the dead or injured every year. Make for a bad ride home. But you're an UHHer so you already know that.

The gates on the north boundary are both open year round. The only road open year round connects these two gates. However, the roads to the south are not plowed until early May, if then. You need to google the park to determine what your best options will be. Things are extremely complicated, mostly because Yellowstone has it's own weather systems. Check with the park information as to when different entrances are usable, not just open. Good luck and enjoy your "southern adventure".
