Mike & All, Sorry you're frustrated with Picasa. I've been using the program for years with very few issues. Yes, it will search, find and import ALL of your photos into the program upon first install. It's default setting is designed to do that. Itdoes NOT erase those imported files from your hard drive. I atually use 3 different programs for photo storage/manipulation and Picasa has NEVER erased photos from any of those programs. If you don't want Picasa to import photos from a specific folder, you can unselect that folder/site from the Picasa defaults. Do accomplish this, open Picasa, click on "tools" in the menu bar then choose "Folder mangager". There are directions there. Hope this helps. I LOVE Picasa. It's much easier to manipulate photos in this program and heck.....IT'S FREE.

I too have what I consider SERIOUS problems since I downloaded Picasa 3 ! When I first downloaded Picasa 3, it searched my hard drive for ALL picture files ( It took well over an hour to do this! ) By this time I was too tired to try it out, so I shut down the program. Several days later I started to view some older photos to select some to edit in my new, free, easy to use editing program when I discovered that many photo files had been moved or resorted into different folders using an illogical order. Not connecting this problem to my newly downloaded program I assumed (I know, DON'T ASSume anything) It was because my hard drive was almost full. I spent several days re-sorting my photos, putting them back into the proper folders as I moved them to an external hard drive. Until today, I had not connected my file problems with Picasa until today! ( Guess i'm too old to think past my nose!) NOW, to my problem! EVERY time I open Picasa, it (loads ?) or trys to open all my photo files displaying thumbnail images in lower rt hand side of screen at light speed! After several minutes I give up & exit the program. Any idea why it does this EVERY time I open Picasa? I would really like to try it out.

This simply comes back to my first observation and the subject of my original post. Everything about PICASA is so obtuse. Perhaps it's because Computerese needs to be understood intuitively from babyhood, but I swear there is no help from Picasa to guide me along the way. (UHH nabbed the patent!) And as I pointed out to someone - one person having a problem (me - the noisy one?) is indicative of a thousand others who've quietly had the same.
Obviously some people have found it as problematic as you and I have to the point of unceremoniously dumping it, either blabbering insanely or screaming with righteous outrage and turning their backs on it. Others get along with it very well and defend it with religious-like fervour. I'll bet the temperature of this discussion can be felt in Hell. And others, including some of them, have kindly tried to help, and persist in helping, seeming never to give up because we need a hand.
Ah well....... Gimp at least doesn't try to sound like an artist with the wrong number of ears so I'm looking at that now, and I quietly suggest you do too. But have a careful read of some of the excellent explanations freely given during this debate first. You may not need to. Neither may a few others like us.
I'm about Picas-eyed so I take my leave, shaking my head slowly and mumbling quietly.

May patience and tolerance beyond human understanding be with you. And your like.
Amen.

Mike, you mentioned about going to Gimp, really think that is a wise decision on your part. I too struggled with Picasa and after having to double up on my blood pressure meds I finally said "Out Out Damn Spot" and deleted it, and went to Gimp. It's great that so many have had great success using Picasa and I salute them, damn stuck my thumb in my eye, but for myself it was like my EX mother in law and we did not see eye to eye.
If you are persuing Gimp you will find a ton of free tutorials on line, any one that refers to Photoshop will work in Gimp. In fact I did find one that gives instructions on changing Gimp to a clone of Photoshop. So my friend, kick back and chill out have a glass of wine all is not lost for we few that look upon Picasa with such great distain.

Well, you proved that you know how to copy-&-paste the posts of others on the internet. Bob.J is not afraid to post his own thoughts. And "Bazinga" simply means "Gotcha", as in sarcastic humor.

This entire argument about Picasa changing photographs is ridiculous. An indexing system changes nothing, and those who refuse to acknowledge their own hand in mis-handling a program, then blaming that program, deserve a bit of humor at their expense.

Bravo!! That sums up so well what this entire thread (now going on 14 pages!!) has been about.

I found a cute Photo Editor that I use once in a while called Smart Photo Editor. Comes with a lot of tools, has a tutorial, community and is free (I think). I don't remember paying for it. Does not organize photos.

Mike:

Having the same problems as you & after reading several pages of this thread, I skipped to the last page (I think it was pg 12 at that time) I read about going into the "tools" then into "Folder manager." From there I "Red X'ed" everything. Pooff, all gone from Picasa but still on my hard drive! My problem was solved! To use Picasa, I open the program, go to "tools, folder manager"then select the folder I want to edit & put the green check mark on it. This way it only "scans" the folder that I selected & only "scans" it once! Now I can edit photo. So simple but so hard. Being computer dumb is really inconvenient but thanks to your thread I now can use Picasa. THANKS to ALL that have contributed in a possitive way. You now have one more convert to Picasa!

I have a feeling that Mike may have had a corrupted computer (virus) before he installed Picasa. I have experienced no such problems and have used it for years...on several syatems. I also purchased that embedded gem called Picnik and still use both...no problem.

Thank you for your comments.
If only people would go to the Picasa forum and ask questions it would save a lot of bad publicity about a very good program.
HOWEVER- ANY NEW PROGRAM MUST BE LEARNED FIRST. (I am not shouting here, just making a very strong recommendation.)

http://support.google.com/picasa/?hl=en
This will take you to Picasa's support pages. Under Help on the menu bar, then Help and "Contents Index".

1. Picasa does not store your photos, it is a program that shows you what is in the folders you allow it to look into. (Go to Tools-Folder Manager. Blue circle beside your picture folder, red Xs next to other folders and ALSO YOUR C DRIVE. Never let Picasa look into that. iF YOU PLACE A BLUE CIRCLE NEXT TO C DRIVE YOU WILL RECEIVE A WARNING ANYWAY.

2. Your originals are never touched, they are kept on your hard drive.

3. What ever you delete from folders in Picasa is of course deleted from your hard drive.

4. Tools - Configure Photo Viewer lets you select the type of picture files you want Picasa to "see".

I have written a tutorial that's in PDF and if any one is serious about Picasa I would be happy to send you one.
My web album address is

I have about 40 albums there in case anyone wants ideas of what you can do

Google closed Picnik on 19th April but many of the effects, borders etc are under the 4th and 5th editing tabs in Picasa..
Google Plus web albums have access to many, many more of Picnik's special features. :D

Scan Always is better than Scan Once as Picasa will now keep looking for new photos as you Import them. I am so glad people are reading this thread and taking it on board. I have just joined you Hedgehogs and am feeling my way around. I never can work out how to reply to a certain post, instead of going in under neath, my reply is at the bottom of the page quite some way from the person I was replying to. Maybe this

Mike,I understand your feeling as I want to be in control of my computer and am loathe to let it run doing what someone else wants even if I have not asked for it. That is, in part, why I'm a Linux user.

Yes, I liked XP but this computer has Win7 and they've done some things that mean I can't just change over and carry on. I'm on another voyage of discovery now, and I hope the storm doesn't get much worse or I'll be looking for a lifeboat. Hang on.... Is that HMNZS Linux coming over the horizon?
quote=dennis g Mike,I understand your feeling as ... (show quote)

My comment- Linux isn't on the horizon. Its been laying in front of everyone all the time but misinformation from the monopoly has convinced people to not pick it up. Many people don't even know they are already using Linux. If you use Windows the information you get probably comes through Linux, it is used by a majority of servers because of it's stability and malware resistance. If you use a smart phone you use Linux unless you have an iPhone then you use something closely related to Linux. If you use a Mac you use something closely related to Linux, it came over the horizon years ago. And it remains the best OS hands down.
