At the age of 90 my mom was in an assisted living facility pretty much just existing with,it seemed like, a weekly declining quality of life. From my visits I got to know another guy about my age who was often visiting his mother, same age and condition as mine. One day, sitting there looking at our moms I said to him somewhat rhetorically " who the hell wants to live to be 90"??
I'll never forget his answer,,, " someone who is 89".

Even with the aches and pains, as there is less left of it I seem to enjoy it more. maybe because I don't worry about most of the things I can't control. Just thankful for the life that has been given me.

Life will always have its difficult moments but you are right about being thankful. Life is a joyous gift. Appreciation for life and wisdom both come with age.

What amazes me is the Technology! In 1976 I was on a detail when President Jimmy Carter came to Baltimore. There was a S.S agent with him who carried a very large suitcase. I asked the agent I was with, what it contained. He told me that the suitcase contained a "phone" that the President could use to contact almost anyone around the world. I now have a cell phone, that fits in my shirt pocket. It can tell me directions to anywhere, the temperature of a specific location, enable me to use the Interweb, make phone calls and captures images with great clarity.

Don't intend to be a smart ass here, but Jimmy won the election in November of '76 and sworn in on Jan. 20th of '77. But I fully agree with technology advancements. Saw first "Lethal Weapon" movie where Danny Glover calls HQ with "portable" bag phone standing on a bridge to get better reception. Duly impressed.

Yeah, but my thinking voice that freaks out everytime I see him is still 16.

My standard for young is simple. If they are younger than my oldest pair of shoes, theyre young.

Your post reminded me of my father, when he was 82 referring to a 72 year old as "Old Feller". When I pointed out that the subject "Old Feller" was only 72, he said "do you have a point"? Using that analogy, I have every right to refer to you as an "Old Feller". I turned 82 last August. My father made it to 90, smoked 2 packs of camels a day until he was 75, sucked up enough field dust to kill a Regiment with cancer, and ate bacon and eggs every day of his life. I quit smoking at 30 and substituted Single Malt Scotch Whiskey in place of the rest. Good genes are hard to beat.

I’m glad that I have finally gotten old (approaching 72). I like seeing advances and discoveries in technology, science, and astronomy. But I also noticed something else.

When I was a teenager watching TV and movies, I would see various actors who were children, young, middle aged, and old. That’s just the way it was. As time went on, I’d see someone in a movie who looked familiar. Then I realized it was a former young actor - now in his 70's. Wow! What happened? Child actors became adults, and mature actors aged and died. When I was younger, everyone seemed to remain at about the same age. Now I see beautiful young people almost unrecognizable as senior citizens. It’s only by living long enough that we are able to see other people aging along with us.

Just passing along some random observations.

My mirror is more like one of those "funhouse" mirrors that really distort things! :XD: :XD: :XD:

That handsome dude in my mirror has become an old fart with little hair.

That goes for baseball and football players. They seem like kids these days. I remember watching, when I was a kid, and they had adults playing these sports.

I mostly recognize the man in the mirror--it's my grandfather.

Jerry,
I'm 85 and still having a hard time recognizing that old man in the mirror. I don't feel that old! I've had a lot of good years between your age and mine. Enjoy yours!
