I got an email from a friend with an iMac. She was trying to move or copy images from her main drive to an external. She selected several hundred, but was not able to move them. Instead, she got the revolving pinwheel. After several minutes, the images started to appear on her desktop - probably multiples, since she now has over 1,500 filling her desktop. She tried Cmd-A to select and move all to the trash, but that doesn't work. Delecting small groups at a time isn't practical.
I tried putting a bunch on images on my Mac's desktop, and I could select and drag to trash. I guess 1,500 is too many to do at once, though.
Any ideas?

Do you know how much RAM she has? If she selected 'Move" instead of 'copy' then I hope they don't make it to the trash. They will be gone. (Although if she hasn't emptied the trash, probably could restore them) My iMac does not play well without enough RAM. I have an iMac 27 a couple of years old and started with 8 g and increased it to 16 g. Performance was greatly improved.

Close all apps, in Finder Edit, Select All, then in File there should be a 'New folder with "X" number of items listed, click it. The entire desktop should now be in that folder for you to save, trash or whatever.
Here's what I did:
Step one: run time machine on a separate external drive for back-up.
Then:
Open iPhoto, click FILE in the Menu bar and select "switch to Library". A new window should open listing any and all photo libraries. Select the one you wish to move. It should say: iPhoto Library (Default)
Quit iPhoto. Connect the External Drive which you are going to use to copy the photos to. It should appear on your desktop.
Open a new Finder window & click pictures in the left sidebar. Click and drag the iPhoto Library to the external Hard drive on your desktop.
Time depends on size of the library. Check that the photos are on the Hard drive by navigating to the hard drive, click the photo library and "choose" to verify that the photos have been moved.
Quit iPhoto and then eject the hard drive.
Open a new Finder window and navigate to the Pictures folder in the left sidebar again. Rick click or Cntrl+click on the iPhoto file and move to trash.
Empty trash.

Sounds like she has a memory problem; even using one large file, to shift it takes my Mac about 10 seconds to move it- so to try and boost 1500, you have got to be kidding !

Thanks, but her problem is getting rid of maybe 1,500 images flooding her desktop. Individually, they would take too long, and as a group, they seem to be too big to put into the trash.
I let you know if she finds a solution.

Did she try reducing the entire desktop to a single folder?

Every time she tried to do anything with them, they started multiplying. :D
I'll email her and find out what's going on.

It's a 27" about 2 years old, 20GB of RAM, probably a 1TB drive.

I've never heard of that.

What program was she trying to use to transfer the files to the external?

Try it.

If the trash is not on the dock, click GO, choose trash and dump the folder there.

Just dragging and dropping. She thinks she may have double-clicked to make them all open themselves on the desktop.
