Vanguard alta pro 263 at with 100 head; red review
http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-tripod/
it is superb; not too heavy. the 100 head that comes with it is fantastic. The review on this website is one of the most thorough reviews I have read.

Thank you to all for the advice and links. I will check out a few in person, than go with something! If I step in "deep" enough, I will contact MT.

My better half has a nice little Sony A6000 and would like a tripod for it. Hmmmmm? Sounds like a nice Christmas gift.

Any ideas out there on a nice one? I want to make sure it's stable enough to hold up her camera with. 55-210 lens.

Any help is appreciated.

Check out Dolica. I have two, one aluminum and one Carbon. Both great for the price. About $50 and $150.

SunPak Platinum from Best Buy. $29.95. Simple and light. I've had one for 15 years and it hasn't changed even an iota. As good as new. I hung a Sony Alpha 55 with a heavy Sigma zoom and a flash on it for several years and other dSLRs on it before that.

I use it every day for my work taking hundreds of photos a week and its a sturdy little workhorse.

I loved the handle on that Sunpak tripods. I've bought two, ovsr the years. But I could not keep a true 90 degree portrait view with a big lens, unless I rotated the lens collar, which had to be re-rotated when I popped back up to Landscape. I still have both units though. .

I'm using an Olympus m-4/3 now so I have no problem. But previously I put an L-shaped pan head on it that allowed the dSLR and lens to be mounted to the head either vertical or horizontal. The camera's main weight was in the center of the tripod above the pan head so I didn't have the problem you had. I essentially wasn't using the vertical ability of the flipping tripod head itself. Lately I've been doing some verticals (I'm not required to do pans anymore) with it and as long as I have the legs spread far enough, it works just fine.

Sorry, but the Best Buy return policy leaves a lot to be desired, even if you paid cash for your purchase.

Your refund is sent to you via check, if the purchase was over a certain dollar amount.

I learned the hard way, when I tried to cancel an order for a refrigerator within an hour of paying for it.

Check UHH classified from Ed Chu:
Manfrotto MM294C4 ( selling for $101 on Amazon, as I write this ); $ 50
DC area pickup, or, add $ 10 for shipping

If used is acceptable, it's worth investigating
Best of luck & Merry Christmas

Well, I bought a Sony FDR AX-33 camcorder on my credit card in late June at $1000, took it back 2 days later and they immediately refunded onto my card. It showed up two days later. No check involved. We're also only talking about $29.95 so this wouldn't apply anyway. It's not good to disparage the whole store, the whole chain, and their business model because of one experience. You certainly wouldn't do any better by buying it at Amazon and would have the same situation or worse if the delivery had started and would end up with a restocking fee.

I'm partial to old school tripods (Gitzo Tele Studex Giants,) but like the new fangled ball heads from Acratech. Cheaper and much more solid than my old FOBA.

Can I suggest a rethink here dear boy. Or at least get a lightweight one.
I reckon if Mrs Billy found a tripod under the xmas tree she would attempt to break it over my head before ramming it down my throat or worse still pushing it up you know where!
Are you planning to team this up with a couple of smaller gifts such a pair of oven gloves and a new yard brush?
Think again please as I would like to think you will still be available after the festive period. Jewelry some nice lingerie perfume new shoes but NEVER a tripod.

I'd take a tripod from my hubby over lingerie, perfume or oven mitts, any day! I'd just hope he knew what he was doing in choosing it!

There are some questions you should be able to answer when you go to choose a tripod:
How will it be used? At home? Travel? Hiking?
What type of photography does your wife enjoy? Landscape? Macro? Portrait? Birds/animals?
Will she be carrying the tripod any distance?
These are some you can start with.

Good luck!
