is the filter not fitting onto the adaptor or is the adaptor ring not fitting onto the lens?

I've never heard of a 52 53 filter. usually it's one or the other.

Sometimes you need to put the filter on the lens and slowly turn the filter/ring backwards a little until you feel the threads on the ring "seat" into the lens and then tighten as usual. This is the best way to make sure you don't cross thread the filter and the lens which causes new problems. You should never have to force anything. I don't know your level of experience so I'm speaking of the basic level stuff.

Is it possible that you got a filter that is the size of your focal length rather than filter thread?

I've gotten filters in the past that were supposed to be the right size, but were initially very difficult to successfully thread onto a lens. However, with patience and persistence, I was eventually able to do so.
If you keep trying and have no luck, I'd suggest taking it into a camera store and letting them give it a try.

If you have a lens cap, sometimes the thread diameter is printed on there, on the inside, in case you bought the focal length instead.

Please tell us what cannon lens you are trying to mount the filter on. Then tell us what brand of filter and adapter that you have. I'll tell you this. If the fiter ring is made out of alluminum it is prone to binding. Alluminum is gummy by nature.(I'm a retired tool and die machinist) It is very easy to X thread. If it dosen't mount easily do not force it on. Doing so will gaul the threads and apapter ring. The more force the harder it will become to seperate the two.
My sugestion is to spring for a quality filter for your lens. By using a step up adapter ring you may cause unwanted vignetting(darkening of the corners) at higher f - stops, although this is more prone step down rings as wel. If more than 2 sizes up or down the same thing vignetting may happen!
Just bight the bullet and save aggrivation,go ahead and buy a quality fitler in 58mm. If you return the adapter bring your lens and filter to the store where you bought it. Have the salesman make certain that what was in the box was what you were supposed to get and not missmarked ,as mistakes do happen. Hope this helps!

There's also the possibility you got a defective adapter. But from experience its not the best thing to put a filter with a smaller number on a lens with a larger number

If I'm reading this correctly, you're trying to put a 52mm filter on a 58mm lens. I could be way off here, but I was under the impression you could only adapt one way, up. So it sounds like your adapter is designed to adapt a 58mm filter to a 52mm lens. Can anyone else confirm my thinking on this? And cony25, please clarify if I'm reading that correctly.

The polarizing filter says in big letters 58mm, it has two rings, then in smaller letters it says 52 and 54 adapter. The lens is the same size of the 58, but it won't rotate in. I bought it at best buy. I took it back and I don't want the same thing to happen again if I buy another, same size as 58 mm, but would not rotate into my lens. Weird. Any recommendtions for other filters? I am trying to get the misty water effect in broad daylight, and smoothen peoples skin? Please let me know and thank you so much for your responses.

Well I have that same lens and it has a 58mm diameter so you shouldn't need the adapter at all for that filter. If it won't screw on, it may be that the threads on your lens have gotten messed up somehow. I agree with Chris. I would take the whole thing in and have them take a look at it.
