I have plenty of FX glass for the D800 and D810. However my wife wants to start shooting pictures on her own... and wants a lighter set up. She has decided on the the D5500 with 18-140 lens. This Camera fits her hands better and is half the weight ( I tried to get her to use the D800... no luck!!)
How successful will my FX glass be on the D5500?

Why not let her pick a nice higher end Coolpix (or similar) to start with? No lenses to carry or change, but a good zoom range. That would let her travel light, learn, and see if she really likes photography. Easy to upgrade later.

No, it's the other way around. DX lenses are designed to cover the DX sensor which is smaller then an FX sensor.

Think of it in this crude way, using holes to represent lens coverage and pegs to represent sensor sizes.

FX (holes and pegs) = 1.5 in. DX (holes and pegs) = 1 in.

FX "pegs" will ONLY fit thru an FX "hole", but will not fit in a DX "hole". The DX "peg" will fit thru either of the DX and FX "holes". Hence, DX lenses will not fully cover an FX sensor.

Hope this helps.

Hole & Pegs? Confused the hell out of me ;)

Maybe this page explains it clearer with a simple image...

I see 2 reasons to disagree with you.

1 > She already picked what she wants - letting her pick something else isn't "letting" her get what she wants.

2 > More importantly, if the misses gets a Coolpix and decides she doesn't like photography, the OP doesn't wind up with a spare body.

D5500 will take better images than D7100...which also weighs twice as much.

How is that? I thought they both had the same sensor, and given (hypothetically-speaking) the same lens on both camera, shouldn't they both produce images that are equal? Just curious here.

if it's true it's about time to trade in the d7100 body only the d7100 is still a little more and it's been out for 2-3 years now.

The D7100 will autofocus with older AF lenses, the D5500 will not. The D7100 will meter with older manual focus lenses, the D5500 will not. The D7100 has 2 command dials, the D5500 only has one & thus requires the function of that single wheel be changed in the menu system. The D7100 command dials control both the aperture & shutter speed without having to access the menu system. There are other benefits as well, but these are the major ones... It boils down to what the user considers more important.

You will have no problems using FX glass on a DX camera.

I think I should elaborate on my question:
Does any of you readers have a D5500 and tried FX lenses? Could you explain the pluses and minus of this set up?
The FX lenses I have are all modern G lenses.
I have to confess, I had a lot to do with the decision of the D5500: WiFi, touch screen and swivel screen appealed to her; lighter back up camera appeal to me.
I hope this narrows down my question

First off, I do NOT have a D5500, but shoot a D7100 up from a D5100.

I believe the pluses are that pretty much any AF FX lens will focus on a D7100, where on a D5500 it must be an AF-S lens with the motor built in since the D5500 has no internal focusing motor.

Also, OLDER FX lenses, with Aperture Indexing will meter fine on a D7100, but on a D5500 you need the AF-D type lenses to meter properly I believe.
