I am very familiar with the narrow and sometimes winding roads in Europe. That's why they drive smaller cars! So,if you can't rent a car if you're 75, I guess I'll have to do all the driving! We had a stick shift Opel in Germany, which was a BIG car for the roads. Toward the end of my husbands tour of duty, he pushed the car down the hill near our flat while I popped the clutch to get it running! Lol They didn't drive on the "wrong" side of the road so the car was set up the same way as Cars in the US.

And then there's the problem of getting all your luggage in one of those backward dinky cars when traveling from place to place. Maybe I'll opt for a tour instead ( although I do like striking out on my own) if I can find a flexible one.

When I was young, like 60 or so, I had no problem driving from the right side and shifting with my left hand. Adjusting to driving back in the States was harder than the original change. Go figure. And the roads in Cornwall, England, were even narrower than in Ireland. Since my wife and I have aged out from renting in Ireland,we took a tour. We like the relaxed and flexible mode of self-directed travel but you do what you can. After the tour ended we took a bus to Enniskillen Northern Ireland and hired a taxi to take us around. Walking and taxiing worked fine for us.

It helps to travel light. On our last vacation to North America our American friends who were showing us around Cape Cod were amazed at how little luggage we had in our rental car.

The only downside was near the end of our 2006 vacation. We were packing after a few days in Vienna for the flight back hoem to Australia. My wife said "I havn't got enough room in my bag for all these chocolates I purchased".
I said "I will take care of them, I will put them in my bag".
A couple of weeks later my wife said "have you seen your hiking boots and pants anywhere?"
I replied "they were left back in the hoel rooom in Vienna, how do you think I made room in my bag for your chocolates".
She wasn't impressed.

Too funny!! I thought you were going to say that you ate them!! You're lucky they didn't melt! On some of our trips, we have our souvenirs shipped home. My main souvenir will be my pictures! :P

Just be careful now. Some of the airlines carry-on sizes have changed. This case does come in green, desert sand, and I think black. I went directly to a Pelican distribution center and green is all they had in stock so that's what I went with. I'd rather have black.

I was thinking of desert sand, just so it would stand out if I had to check it. Of course, the airlines are not careful with your bags and for that reason, black is a better color.

Well, I'm still youngish (66) and some tours we've taken have been nice but mostly they are just guidelines to see what you want to explore on your own later. We always take advantage of public transportation & taxis.

I've added Enniskillen to my "Ireland list"

I wanted the desert sand color too but settled for green. It will come in handy next year when I travel to Yellowstone with some friends. Even though we may drive instead of fly, my equipment will be very safe in the Pelican case.

I do think the pelican case is a better option than a backpack just in case I have to check it. I would feel a lot more confident that my equipment was safe! So I think I'll put everything I want to take in my backpack and then lift it up to see if I can manage to put it in the overhead baggage compartment. I originally thought that the backpack or pelican case would fit under the seat in front of me, but probably not!

I don't think it will fit under the seat. Even when I flew first class I don't think it would have fit under the seat in front of me.

That's what I thought. Now I'll load everything in the backpack & if I can lift it, I'll order the Pelican case

My wife and I recently spent a week in Ireland. I primarily used my 24-70 mm and occasionally my 16-35 for wide angle shots. I don't think I ever used my 70-200mm. I took my monopod and sometimes used it, but you might consider a bean bag or something similar if you are driving a car (such that you can stop and shoot out of a window or from on the car hood.)
Some overseas carriers do have a weight limit; 24 pounds per person (for both carry ons combined) for some. On a KLM flight a few months ago, they almost would not let me on with my camera gear because it weighed almost 30 pounds. Had to put some peripheral equipment (no lenses or cameras) in my checked baggage before they would let me on.

I just took some portraits today of my grandkids with the 50/1.4 and they were a little soft so I will definitely leave that one at home. Also I am pretty convinced that the 70-200 won't be worth the extra weight of it plus the fact that I need the tripod to use it. The 24-70/2.8 is my go to lens for special occasions so I will definitely take it and the new ultra wide angle (for landscapes) and the 35/1.8 (for street photography). I'll probably have room for the 18 to 300 that is currently on my husband's camera and maybe take his camera too as a backup. Whatever will fit in my new pelican case so that if I have to check it instead of carrying it on, I won't worry about my equipment from damage. Plus I'll have my small point-and-shoot if worse comes to worse and my equipment is stolen or lost! :?

I mailed a used Nikon d5100 to a friend in London and the damned UK customs stuck him for 150 pound tariff. I know Ireland is not part of the UK, but if you mail your lenses to a hotel in Ireland, the customs folks might stick you with import taxes.

As for a heavy tripod (and dare I suggest, your heavy lens?) you might consider mailing/shipping it to your hotel a few weeks before your arrival, then mailing it home afterward. When I made a trip to Yosemite National Park, we had bought so many souvenirs that we packed them up in a box and shipped it home via UPS. It kept the carry-on luggage to a minimum. I don't know what International Shipping costs are like (and I would definitely have it insured), but it's worth checking out.
