Decision on a Mac

I probably mentioned that my son has been thinking about replacing his Dell running Vista with a Mac. It looks like he's made his decision. Now all he has to do is commit to spending the $1,600.

21.5" iMac
16GB memory
1TB Fusion drive
Wired keyboard w/keypad.

HGST 2TB external drive in an enclosure of some kind.

If money were no object, he'd get a loaded 27", but this one should be fine for him. He'll be running a couple of Windows-only programs in Boot Camp.

Thanks for your comments and suggestions.

Instead of Boot Camp, which works fine by the way, have him look at Virtual Machine software, Virtual Box is free and does a good job with running pretty much any OS inside another OS, Parallels is a highly rated VM commercial software package, and VMWARE Fusion for the Mac is highly rated commercial VM software from VMWARE that allows you seamlessly run OS X & Windows.

BTW - I run several flavors of Linux and Windows in Virtual Box on my iMac currently. Stopped using Boot Camp a long while back. A VM seems handier then rebooting.

When I purchased my Mac I went through B&H. Saved several hundreds of dollars over going to the Apple store. Also purchased from B&H an Apple Care warranty at a reduced price.

My son ordered from MacMall and saved $50; $2,149 vs $2,199. Unless you spend a lot more, the savings aren't there. Less desirable models have greater discounts. Also, many of the configurations were "On backorder." He decided against AppleCare after reading about it online. Chances of something going wrong in three years are remote. I've had a 21.5" and a 27" since 2011, and they've never had a problem. He has a year to buy it if he decides he wants it.

I'm surprised that the iMacs no longer include a provision for inserting a disc. He'll have to buy an external drive. My 2011 iMac has an opening in the right side for a disc.

I purchased a 27" iMac and saved about $300 going to B&H.
I think we will see more and more non-Disc machines. Software companies are wanting online ordering. May cut down on sharing software but it is a pain not being able to use my older software disc without an external drive.

My 2 cents worth. Not everyone will agree. Can of worms may be on the way.
Why why purchase a Ferrari then try to run a VW equipment on it? (Windows on a Mac)

Your son might want to check out the Mac Mini as he already has keyboard and monitor.

He does a lot of video editing using PowerDirector, a Windows-only program. It's a very competent program that can work with multiple video and audio tracks, and he doesn't want to learn a new program.

It's not recommended for video editing.

Lucky! Nothing like that now.

The more they remove from computers, the less money it costs to build them.

I think one of the big deciders on removing the internal DVD from the new IMAC - THIN is IN... so they had to lose the space to thin the case.

Probably more costly to redesign the DVD drive to thin down to fit in the case.

We already had this discussion on another forum. Seems Macs can't do everything even though you would like to think they can. Appears some programs and applications won't work with a Mac OS.

My 2 cents worth: I would never have an all-in-one desktop computer no matter who makes it.

As everyone knows, you can never be too rich or too thin. Apple is the richest, so it's pursuing thinness.

He may want to rethink Apple Care. I've used it twice in the last six months. Maybe he's lucky...I hope. Out of pocket would have been $1600 on the Macbook Air alone...stuff happens.

When my wife bought her new Mac (several years ago), the disc drive was dead on arrival. The "genius's" (that's what the call themselves) at the Apple store couldn't fix it ? So they had to order her a new Mac and transfer all the data she added since her purchase. Two trips to the store, 3 hours lost time driving. Maybe a design flaw or a subcontractor problem?
