I have LR 2015.2.1 which is supposed to work OK for importing but it doesn't for me.

When I turn my camera ON which is connected to my computer I get a screen that will import pictures randomly in my Pictures folders without the option of adding keywords and folder name. I believe this isn't a lightroom screen so I cancel that and press import on the LR screen.

It asks me to select a source which I do and then a screen comes up with old pictures some showing "Preview unavailable for this file." No new photo appears. At the top of the screen there is a button that says "Import 175 Photos." I have one new photo in my camera!

I had unchecked "Show "Add Photos" screen in Preferences.

What is going on?

It doesn't appear that LR is allowing you to separate your folders within your camera for viewing, but obviously is taking all of them into consideration. Instead of selecting your camera for the files, try choosing "Browse Computer" and then selecting your camera as a portable drive from that menu. That should let you continue to break it down to be able to view the individual date folders on your camera's memory card so you can select the one photo you were wanting.

Make like easy for yourself. Copy your images to a folder on your hard drive that is used only as a temporary repository. This way you are sure that you have a good copy and nothing will go wrong with the transfer from camera to computer.

Then import into Lightroom being sure to use the COPY funtion. That way if LR screws up, your original images are safe. The the import is complete and checked, go back and delete the images in the temporary import directory.

I keep this directory on the Desktop and gave it the highly original name of 'Pics to Import'.

As an alternative, you can copy them to their final directory location where you store all your images. Then you can just 'ADD' them to the LR catalog, however you will not be able to rename them with this method.

First I don't have to connect my camera, I just insert the card, further I don't need to restart LR to import a second card. You may simply just have to learn how to operate the import screen

I was very good with the import screen until Adobe updated to a newer version that completely changed and withdrew certain items that were commonly used by many photographers (like the ability to move groups of images from one import location to another a common complaint from many working professional photographers that were caught between versions on a job). Adobe has already apologized for their stupidly dumbing down the import screen because many pros had turned off the phone home ability of their Lightroom/Photoshop and messed up Adobe's ability to see what people use. Not that they will fix it. I also use a card reader and do not need to connect my camera. The Adobe update makes inserting a second card into the reader irrelevant since Lightroom has already read the card. So, under the new updates, Lightroom has to be shut down and reopened to make it recognize a new card. (Adobe is supposedly working or soon will provide a fix).

First you can't turn off and leave off the need for the CC product to call home. It will pop up errors and after a short time it will stop working altogether. Second I don't understand what you mean by not being able to move groups of images. I have no issue moving images still.

Is the import dialog different? Absolutely, I am a working photographer so I use this often, and there are a few annoyances for me. I made my views clear to Adobe. But getting used to the Import dialog is easy, after only 2 uses I had it down again. I'm stall able to import, rename, add presets all the things I need to do albeit in a different interface. I'm not saying you should be happy and move on, on the contrary I let Adobe I missed a few things. Things like the auto eject, but these things are minor annoyances. I believe they will bring them back. But if one puts a little energy into figuring out the import interface, it takes very little time to get used to it.

I agree with you about them bringing back some of the features that they took out. As for turning off the phone home, I was repeating what many of the "pros" in the Adobe forum were complaining about and Adobe's admission to them that they realized that many were "not reporting back" because the "working" computers were not constantly connected to the internet. And blamed the photographers for not providing reliable feedback before the changes. Personally, I don't remember Adobe asking users for feedback prior to making changes but, maybe I wasn't a part of that group. I do trust Adobe to eventually get it right, but sometimes we have to hold their (as with any other company providing a service to users) feet to the fire for making un-informed decisions. I have been a Cloud supporter since it was first rolled out and a Lightroom / Photoshop user for years prior. However, I also use Nikon's View NX, Capture NX-2 (and reluctantly Capture NX-D) Nikon Camera Control Pro (which I love for tethered shots, Portrait Pro (though it has to be carefully controlled as it will over process) and many other pieces of photography software in my arsenal. I am sort of a photo processing junkie and will try many but seem to revert to Lightroom/Photoshop and the Nikon standbys.
Having said all of this, I do believe that Adobe admits that they did a knee jerk reaction to a problem that didn't really exist and made a few changes for the sake of being able to say that they fixed a problem that didn't exist. Either that or they attempted to dumb down an interface for the general public and should have given an interface option to their users.
