Death Valley holds the record as the hottest place on earth, with 134° being recorded on July 10, 1913. Last night, I saw an article about 119° being a new October high temp. It was set in South Africa this past Tuesday. That's got to be very uncomfortable.

I have been to both Arizona and New Mexico when it was in the 120s......yes, very hot. The wind feels like sandpaper on your face.

However, living here in Chiraq, I have been in temps over 100 with high humidity, and not only was it at least as uncomfortable, it ended up being more deadly to both people and animals.

Yep - experiencing 116 degrees in Arizona was very unpleasant, but Borneo at 100 degrees with 100 percent humidity and no breeze was awful. As interesting a place as it was, I really have no desire to go back because of the heat.

I imagine the bugs and critters were no bargain, either.

At Bako National Park the only critters that were awful were the nasty macaque monkeys that would steal anything not nailed down. We would sit at a picnic table to eat our meals, but you had to keep one arm raised with a rock in it, ready to throw it (or at least looking like you were ready to throw it) so that they wouldn't attack you while you ate. One monkey managed to sneak under the table without us seeing it - he leaped up onto the table, waving his arms in the air, hissing, and baring his great big teeth! Of course, this scared the crap out of us and we jumped back - and he grabbed a bag of oranges and ran off! The little bastard! My brother, the colonel, only wished he had his 45 with him!

While in the Navy in the Philippine Islands; it was close to 130 degs. and the humidity was like a steam bath. Cleans the pores!

I was in Vegas when it was a bit over 100 - definitely uncomfortable.

Experienced riding a motorcycle in 126 degree heat across the lower desert in Ca. Also rode across OK in 102 degrees with 90% humidity. Both rides were miserable but if I had to do one of them again, I'd take the extreme heat of the southwestern desert over the cesspool of higher humdity.

I went for a bicycle ride once in Burbank CA when it was 114 just for the experience. It wasn't bad at all.

I know it gets hot down there in the San Fernando Valley but never thought it would be that hot!

I also lived in AZ for a while. The desert temps can get very high, but I was surprised that the humidity was so low that I couldn't really feel the heat. Having and drinking water regularly was important, because my body didn't tell me that I needed to hydrate.

BTW - it also snowed 17 inches when I was there too. The weatherman at the time said that it was the first time in 20 years that they actually got snow. I think that this was in 1975.

I spent one summer in AZ. It hit 119 while I was there. But being a dry heat, it only felt like 110. :-)
