Canon SX50 will not focus on the moon

I cannot get a clear shot of the moon. It was a full moon the other night and I could not get the camera to focus or get the exposure correct. Any suggestions. Thanks.

I used manual focus and set it to infinity. Also manual exposure set close to the "sunny 16" rule. Tweak it until it looks good.

Take Math78's advice. Manual focus. Begin your settings at ISO 400, 125 @ f/11. Adjust settings as needed.

With my SX50 on Sept. 28, the night of the eclipse, I used ISO 200, f/8.0, 1/160 sec. Edited minimally in Lightroom 5.7

Do you, by any chance, have it it macro or any other mode that would restrict focus distance?

I have a Fuji HS50 and I have to use spot metering to get it to focus on the moon.

Of course there is a problem with haze at times in Florida... 99.99% of the time.

Everyone show you it can be done.... well here is how...

I think manual focus setting in such cameras is a matter of fun only and is not real. This is one of my worries. I was not successful and gained absolutely no satisfaction when I wanted to try and at the end became nervous. May be there is a problem with me, I do not know. Or, camera manufacturers trying to appease customers virtually. You can see this picture of the moon taken by manual settings and the camera self detecting focus with SX50HS.

That's a nice shot farrokh. I like the not full moon shot. Nice effect.

You're mostly right. Manual focus on this camera is only useful at infinity.

Here is a shot from my Fuji HS50 aperture priority and spot metering using full digital zoom.
