Hi Everyone: Looking for comments on the pan/tilt head for my monopod.
Has anyone purchased this? If so will it hold a Nikon D-7100 w/ 18-140 lens. I am looking for a product (not to expensive) to shoot my grandson's lacrosse and soccer games. I am concerned about the weight. Specs. show it will hold 6.6 lbs. What do you think?
Thank you,
Jules

Bad idea. Pan heads are more suited for a tripod than a monopod as the final product depends on utter stability.

What type of head do you recommend for a monopod and why?

A tilt head is my preferred head. I have a Manfrotto 234, Manfrotto 234RC (with quick release), and a generic one with Arca quick release. I put an Arca QR adapter on the regular 234 and aligned it perpendicular to the tile; that makes it suitable for cameras with L-brackets. The norm for an Arca tilt head is to align the adapter with the lens, which makes it suitable for large lenses with tripod mounts.

In general, I prefer the Manfrotto 234RC; it allows quick release for the camera for occasional hand held use or for moving about.

I also sometimes use a ball head, but if you want to use one get the three knob variety (with a friction knob) so you can set a friction level to keep the camera from flopping about when you loosen the ball tightening knob. The rotating knob can be kept tight; the monopod rotates just fine without it.

I use a small ball head, it gives almost total freedom of motion and position of the camera.

I chose a Sirui CF monopod, and a small Sirui ball head for it.
It works well when I want to have my camera angled to the stick itself. Pan is easy as just turning the stick and all. ;)
But IMHO, and retrospect, I think a tilt head would be the ideal head for a monopod. IE:http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0086LLK7M?keywords=sirui%20tilt%20head&qid=1446166585&ref_=sr_1_4&sr=8-4
I do use my Sirui ball head elsewhere, so its functions are good other places.
But a tilt head allows for what you need, just tilt.

I like using my monopod for grand stands, and where a tripod would be too obtrusive.

I'm thinking this might be a good light duty head for your monopod, but I would cut off the handle ahead of the bend and pin a short length of dowel rod for a knob. Keep the pan knob tightened.

The idea is to replace the inconvenient long handle with a short tilt-tension adjusting knob.

Yes, well, what about the pan feature?

Much harder to use than a simple tilting head like this:

I also prefer a side knob. This one has a quick release plate:

Same as http://www.manfrotto.com/monopod-quick-release-head, but, if you can find a non-rc, you can add a Kirk plate & QR.
