Mess? The import changes were a bad move, but import still works - it is not a big deal, but I am glad they want to reverse it to the "advanced" capability that they had.
I honestly do not see it as a "mess" to avoid though. Importing is only one aspect of post processing.
I may be a lucky one as I saw no real issues using the "flubbed" version, other than the inconvenience of the dumbing down of the import screen - no crashes, no hiccups, no slow downs. And of course the patch came out very quickly to address the major problems that were reported, and when the new update comes along I hope it will smarten the import back up where it belongs.

Ooops! On Edit I see Gallagher already said it well.
The current version runs well for many. Some don't like the simplified import process. Some think it still has "bugs" causing difficulties with speed, exports, etc. Adobe has promised to put the traditional, and more complex, Import routine back in. They have additionally suggested they are working on "bug" fixes. They have not promised a timetable.
The current 6.2.1 version that installs is actually an update to the 6.2 version that caused the kerfuffle. It has a few critical "bug fixes" that seemed to mostly affect Apple owners. It still has the simplified Import screens.
Guru's such as Victoria Brampton, the "Lightroom Queen" suggest that, unless you have a crashing crisis with 6.2.1, you install, smile and be happy.
For those that can't stand the current version, Adobe has explained a "roll back" technique. It first puts you back to 6.0. Then, if you want 6.1, you can get that. 6.1 seems to be a bit of a favorite because it has the Haze slider and is regarded as "stable".
Oddly, if you dig deep enough a "bug report" can be found for even 6.1.

I'm confused. This article mentions Lightroom 6.1 and 6.2 but my CC versions say 2015.1.1 for my laptop and 2015.1.1 for my desktop. Am I current?
I am also happy with LR CC and will be happier when the familiar Import with more advanced features returns. I wouldn't let it stop you. You can still add keywords and apply lens correction presets in the new dumbed-down import, the main 2 things I require to keep my life on track. Good luck.

In light of your comment & that I'm a newbie to the current assortment of software available, do the criticisms of the Lightroom CC package also apply to Lightroom 6.x? What about vice-versa? Or are there differences between the CC package for rent and the standalone Lightroom product?
Thank you,

Sorry, I meant 2015.2.1 for the laptop. Does 1.1 equal 6.1? And does 2.1 equal 6.2??

There are two separate 'instances' of Lightroom. Version 6.X is a standalone, buy it, install it, forget it version. Adobe's attempt to pacify those who do not want to commit to the subscription.
Version 2015.X.X is the subscription version. It gets updated regularly with new functionality.
Both look and work the same way, except the subscription version gets embellished with feature enhancements.

Lightroom CC - 2015.2.1 is current so far....
The very latest update is 2.3.0 (151) Macs
and 2.1.0 for Windows
This is the one that repaired problems that hit Mac users the most. Contains the simplistic import screen and bug fixes.

If I understand you correctly, does that mean that the standalone LR 6.x gets updated less frequently than does the LR CC, so that it's not quite at the same "cutting edge" most of the time?

2.3? Have not seen that one yet - I had the one where the import screen changed and others complained about problems, but worked fine for me... then got the fix for the "problems" but still not seeing 2.3.0 here on my Mac.

Thanks, Don. That's why I keep getting update popups on my desktop.
