I've been out of the game for awhile, is it possible to have an F stop of 0 as shown on the data chart in this post?
Posted by rehess a few posts above.

That was the exposure bias, not the aperture.

Never-mind, I checked again... F = 0 sorry.

This is likely an error reading the EXIF if a data is not present it defaults to '0' or 'null'.

You are so nice to carry on with this problem. The picture you showed me of your readout on the priorities lists Light source as unknown and Exposure as "unknown" too. But at least I know where to look now. There must be some setting I have not put in the camera that will make it show up. Many other things are printed out but there are also a number of unknowns listed. I know I could keep track in the old fashioned way, but this camera is supposed to be so spectacular that such a record must be available someplace without doing paper and pen work. If someone could show me in Tools or Menu where I might find the information to access it, I would be extra happy. Thank you all so much.

Jethro779, I got a ViewNX2 disc with the camera and downloaded it, but haven't a clue about all the abbreviations that come up when I open it. Is that the one you pictured in your note to me or is it something completely different?

I just took a photo with my D90 in Portrait mode and one in Landscape mode. I opened it in Nikon ViewNX2 and in Nikon Capture NX-D. The metadata in both show in the exposure section that the camera was in Portrait mode and in Landscape mode for the other photo. I'll attach screenshots of the one I did in Portrait mode in both software packages.

I am trying out a Nikon D3300 camera and have taken a variety of photos without writing down what I did each time.

When "trying out" a new anything, you should keep your own notes. My suggestion is to write down the various settings that you will use BEFORE actually shooting. It much easier to follow a script than it is to shoot first and then write what you did. If you are trying out the various auto options ... write down the options and then just follow the script.

There are settings in the camera, that will let you see the photo data. Learning how to do this isn't always easy, because of the way they write the manuals.

Faststone Image Viewer is a free computer download that shows lots of the data and does many other things.

Load the photos into the computer. Right click on the photo you want to view. Open with Faststone. Move the curser to the right edge of the photo, the data box will pop up. You will find the exif data and histogram there.

Moving the curser to the other corners will give you other options to consider.

I have Lightroom and Photoshop, but use Faststone to view photos and make minor adjustments.

I have an iMac. If I click on a photo in iPhoto, up at the top is a list of items, one being "photo". If i click on that, then on "about photo" in the drop down list, it gives me all the information about that photo: mode, shutter speed, f-stop, etc.

It must be that I have to download all my photos into the ViewNX2 which I had not done. Do you know if all the thousands of pix I have on my computer will attempt to go into ViewNX2 or just the ones I take with the Nikon camera? Since I have so many photos I don't want them duplicated into another program.

Thanks, CO. As soon as I get that answer I will go ahead and put the new pix into it. By the way, this is not just for the photos I already took but for all those in the future. I knew there must be a way.

I also have the same question. I am grateful for number of people on this site who generously share their knowledge and have the patience, and intelligence, to know that other members are at all levels of experience and expertise.

I use a Nikon D200. I like the camera; it serves all of my needs. It was purchased new immediately after it was released. I'm sure that software came with the camera; where I've kept it all these years I'm not so sure of.

All but one of my lenses are Nikon Ai; I tell the camera ahead of time which lens I'm using. I have an iMac G5 with an intel processor. I use iPhoto (I know, primitive and probably discontinued) to process my images and Photoshop CS 6 for post production.

Locating the EXIF data is likely not difficult, I just don't know how to do it.

Thankyou.

If you use the Nikon program all that goes into it will be the photos on the camera card.Depending on which Nikon program you use it will show up listed as a sub folder in your pictures folder.

I use an iMac.

ViewNX2 will open .jpeg files created in any camera or software. As far as RAW files go it will only open Nikon RAW (NEF) files.

You can transfer files from your camera or memory card reader using the Transfer function in ViewNX2. I like to use it because it creates a new folder for you and numbers the folders sequentially.

Jethro, CO and The Watcher, Thank you so much for the information. I can now see the details, as I was able to find my way partly around the ViewNX2. However, for some reason I haven't been able to get the photos transferred directly from the camera. I will have to work on that some more, maybe will find a video about the installation, as the small manual is hard for me to read and I probably did not install VN 100% properly.
One thing at a time for me!! Thanks again.

When you have ViewNX2 open you will see Transfer on the toolbar. If you connect your camera or memory card reader to your computer and click Transfer it will see the camera or memory card. You click "Start Transfer" at the bottom right of the window and it will create a new folder for you and transfer the files. If it's not working it's possible that there's an older version of ViewNX2 on your disc and it has the original Transfer function. The latest version is Transfer 2. The D3300 is a very new camera and the original Transfer function may not work with the D3300 files. You can download the latest version of ViewNX2 from Nikon's website. You may have to create an account on Nikon's website before it will allow downloads. I had to create an account on their website in order to register my Nikon gear.
