Recovering .jpg thumbnail files

I had my RAW images (as .CR2 files) on a hard disk that crashed. I tried all kinds of recovery methods. I can see the thumbnails, but the RAW files are so corrupted they won't display. Is there a way to somehow save the JPG thumbnails as a way to at least have those images. I had some kind of major computer wreck that wiped out my hard disk and completely erased my backup drive.

err... The only way this tragedy can happen is if you keep the backup on the computer vs an intermittently connected drive.

Chalk this painful experience under lesson learned.

As to saving the thumbnails? There is no point they are not usable.

You have my sympathies. If the images are exceptionally valuable, you might want to try a data recovery service. Otherwise, consider a secondary, even tertiary, backup arrangement.

People think I'm paranoid, but I've got three local backups and one remote backup service. I still worry about loosing images.

type into Google "Extract jpeg from cr2" and you will get a lot of sites which provide free extractors. I can't recommend one above the other because I don't use CR2 files.

I use one for extract jpegs from NEF files by Kevin Peng. It works instantly, cleanly and extracts the Large jpg from the raw file. (The large jpeg has the same pixel dimensions as the raw file.)

Make sure you choose one for CR2 files and compatible with your op system.

Some of these work by entering code, some just work by using the "Send to" on the right click menu in Windows.

I read it as the cr2 raw is corrupt but the preview file still exists within the raw file.

If he means the preview is already separate from the raw, then the thumbs may be recoverable as mini-jpgs, depends what software is showing them. In this case the thumbs will serve as a reminder to back up in future.

Is not LR keeping thumbnails separated from the raw files*? (remember I do not use LR) If that is the case there is no proof at all that the raw are being read.

------
* To allow tracking on remote (off computer) files?

The thumbnails in LR are but copies of the thumbnails in the rawfile. They exist outside of the raw file, and can be converted to jpgs simply by changing the suffix to ".jpg" Unfortunately, these thumbnails are very small, the thumbs in the raw file are bigger.

For whatever reason the data in a raw file which makes up the NEF or CR2 seems to be more vulnerable to corruption than the embedded jpeg. (some raw files have more than one size of embedded jpg), most extractors choose the largest.

If these images are in LR, and if LR cannot read the raw file, it will show the thumb and mark it as image missing. If LR can "see" the raw file, the preview will be shown as good and the only indications of the file being corrupted with show up in the Develop Module.
