Canon said they couldn't repair my SX50, so would send me a new or refurbished camera back. A limited 6 month warranty. Any comment/opinion on this procedure? Thnx,

Same thing happened to me. However, I bought the floor sample from Target and also bought an extended warranty.

You're very lucky. Their services are the best. It happened to me when I bought an SX 50. They sent me a new one and it's worked perfectly for the last couple years during which I've taken about 20,000 pictures. Enjoy your camera!
How long have you had the camera? Beyond the one-year warranty? How many shots have you taken? Is the offered replacement a free one?
My first SX50 gave up after about 14 months, but I had shot many, many thousands of pictures - most in high speed burst mode. At first they offered me a refurbished for $300, with one-year warranty.
But talking to another rep on another day - and pointing out I'd been recommending the camera to UHH members, they agreed to replace for free. The refurbished are good as new.
And with my "savings," I bought a Canon lens for my T3i :)
My camera is about 6 months old, still under warranty, and the replacement is free. I think I'm getting a fresh start, and have read that refurbs are as good as new.

There are low cost warranties. I have up til now always bought one. Never needed one, so forgot when I got my SX50 last month. Monday I will invest a few $ for "just in case". One level is cameras under $150, my SX50 just fits that, but then again, the retail is $450?? Will call to find out.
http://www.mackcam.com/warranties/digital-cameras/http://www.squaretrade.com/camera-warrantySquaretrade is $30 for 3 years. A good deal... $150 camera. If FMValue price $450 the cost is $44 which is 1/3 what I paid for the camera, not a good deal.

Love how you rationalized the new lens!
