Any sources for actual technical lens reviews, particularly for Canon?
Reviews, like DXOmark, need to be taken with a grain of salt. Those are lab bench test results. They don't correspond well to real world shooting. Your best bet is to rent a lens & see if it meets your expectations in real world shooting. Differences in many DXOmark bench test numbers are minimal. Keep in mind that (without IS) most shooters can't expect to capture more than 40 lppm without utilizing a tripod, even with the best technique. Thus the extra resolving power of the more expensive lenses is wasted.

What are you technically shooting?
Dpreview and Popular Photography have good tests of cameras and lenses.

I like Photozone and ephotozone, both have lab analysis as does cameralabs.
