I have a Nikon d3300 and use a Kenko pro master 1.4 TC with my 55-300 nikon lens which has VR. Very pleased with the results

To each their own.... The 1.3 crop mode only uses the central portion of the image & when you crop the DX format, you effectively allow yourself to adjust composition a lot easier than if you use the in camera 1.3X crop feature... I seldom use converters & thus that isn't an issue... My niche is macro & my 105mm macro lens is a pretty permanent fixture on my D7100 except for when I have a paid shoot to do... I have all focal lengths covered from 10 to 500mm so the need for a converter is minimal...

If that were true you could use a 50mm and crop it. Unless you use a full frame you are already constrained. To use the on off 1.3 setting in the camera is fast. A lot faster than changing a converter and getting dust in the camera.

I unerstand you can't use a teleconverter with that lens anyway. The lens element interferes with the TC and you could damage both.

One point you are neglecting to account for is that TC's change the focal length of the lens in use, using the 1.3X crop mode simply changes the FOV (Field Of View), utilizing less of the sensor than the use of a TC . The D7100 in 1.3 crop mode is the equivalent sensor size of a M4/3rds camera...

Does autofocus work with the Kenko?

I'm assuming that AF working or not depends on the aperture of the lens & the ambient light levels. A zoom that is 5.6 or greater at max likely won't AF with a TC attached. That said, I don't usually use TC's anyway and my variable aperture zooms are all faster than F5.6 at the long end. ...

Some Nikons autofocus at f8, including the D8xx and D7100+, so they might autofocus with the 1.4 and a lens like the new Nikon 200-500. Nikon claims it works with their 1.4. Just wondering if anything else might interfere.

I read up on the Kenko and so far believe it will work.

I have hi-end tc's and el cheapo's. I get good results from both kinds, if I do my part. when used properly fast or slow lenses don't matter. with some combos it will be strictly manual focus. if you can live with that , you're good to go. go to search at the top of this pace and type in teleconverters, you'll get a wealth of info and samnples.

I don't know the weight of the Sigma 150 - 500 lens. I sometimes use my Canon 2 X TC with my Canon EF 70-200
f 2.8 IS II USM Telephoto Zoom on my Canon 70 D and get fairly good results. However, this combination is not light weight so I am wondering what the actual weight difference might be. And with this particular comparison your Sigma has a +100 mm advantage.

f8,iso 160, 1/500, 200mm with 2X TC=400mm
f8,iso 160, 1/500, 200mm with 2X TC=400mm...

looks like I'll be going with him, these were taken with a minolta maxxum 500mm auto focus reflex lens with a 1.4 vivitar tc.
the auto focus works with the tc.

TRY before you buy, and with every lens you plan to use with it. There's a good chance it might be acceptable. There's a good chance it won't be acceptable. I have an old TC that is absolutely terrible with every lens I own.

I know a couple of people who have great TC experiences, but one of the guys only uses it successfully with two of his prime lenses. The other guy can use it with his zooms, although not at maximum zoom.

The differences in 1.4X extenders is not that great - 2X - that is where the large differences come in !
