Sorry I can't answer your question, but keep in mind that you lose an f stop with a 1.4 TC and two f stops with a 2X TC.

I like the extra 1.3 crop built in the D7100. I use that with my Nikon 28-300mm. I don't like converters.

If you have a very fast, sharp lens, particularly a prime, then a TC can be used effectively. I wouldn't recommend using a TC with a slow zoom. They will work OK with a fast zoom. I know you're a Nikon user, but I'll note I've gotten pretty good results with a 2X TC and a Canon f/2.8 VC 70-200 zoom. I've gotten TERRIBLE results with the 2X TC and a Sigma 150-500 f/5 - f/6.3 zoom - very soft/unsharp.

I use an Olympus 1.4 TC on an Olympus 40-140 F2.8 zoom (tjhat is a good lens) and the results are great.

I have a Kenko 1.4 that I use with my Nikons, and I'm pleased with the results. Read reviews and articles, and make sure the TC you want will work with the lens.

Dabble,
Your situation is identical to mine. I have a d7000 &used a Sigma 80-400mm...found it was way to heavy for me. I now have a Nikon f/4 300mm with Nikonn 1.4 teleconverter. It is lighter (somewhat) but I use a monopod which helps considerably. Downside is the Nikon doesn't have VR...altho newer ones do (B&H $1996). To compensate, I use a higher Iso & shutter speed. Hope the helps in your dilema .

TCs work well with some lenses and not with others. They work best with fast telephoto prime lenses.

There is light loss of 1 to 2 stops depending on the magnification. All degrade image quality to some noticeable degree. They also affect focusing speed.

Some people like them, others avoid them altogether. It depends on how the image is used and personal tastes and standards.

If size and weight is a concern you may be better served by a m4/3 camera and lenses.

I love my Kenko 1.4 on my 55-300 lens.I had the sigma 150-500 & had to sell it because it was just to heavy for me.The pictures are sharp so I am happy!

I use my Kenko on my 150-500, I also see no issues with sharpness.

TC's are very useful when you need that extra little reach.

My nit with that is that you then have to keep your subject within the hash marks if you want it in the picture. I'd rather crop after the fact than be constrained by the 1.3 crop mode...

If that were true you could use a 50mm and crop it. Unless you use a full frame you are already constrained. To use the on off 1.3 setting in the camera is fast. A lot faster than changing a converter and getting dust in the camera.

It is really a mixed bag. I use TC's on ALL my Canon mount lenses - 300 2.8, Canon 70-200 L and Sigma 100-300 f4 - and they are astoundingly good ! - but they do loose light :(

Having said that, I am moving to Sony A77 II - one of the main reasons being the in camera electronic 1.1-2X pixel enlargement Clear Image Zoom. No TC's to fool with and no loss of light ! :)
