Hi does anyone know what size frame to purchase for an 8x12 photo?
Or can anyone some how explain how to shoot the right way so you can crop properly 8 x 10 mostly water pics, bridges & nature?
thank you
Donna
Are you going to use a mat?

And other questions she needs to answer are does she want to pay for a pricey Custom Frame or Custom Mat, or use just a standard off the shelf traditional size Frame / Mat / Board?
It has always been odd how film came in certain ratios
2:3 (35mm)
1:1
4:5
4.5:6
6:7
5:7
Yet prints and frames commonly
4x5"
5x7"
8x10"
11x14"
16x20"
Today there are more sizes of frames (fewer of pre-cut mats), but rarely to match the 2:3 (4x6", 8x12", 10x15", etc.) sizes for DSLR and 35mm SLR film cameras.
Just want to buy standard frame if possible not 8x12, but something larger..

OK, you'll want a matted print, They sell pre-cut cover mats but only in a few sizes. I find the whole framing business for photographs a pain.
You might find a ready made 12x18" frame or another close size.
for say your 8X12 (full 35mm ratio) you might want 1.5" to 2.5" of mat around it. It is also popular for salon or museum mounting to have the space at the bottom wider.
say for you 8x12 to have 3" around the L & R sides and Top and 4" across the bottom.
So you would need a 18x15" frame, mounting board, and mat with a 7.75x11.75" opening in the cover mat, but not centered. That would of course likely be a custom size.
You can cut your own mats any size you want. I've done it years ago but with arthritis now that is next to impossible.
would like to use a mat yes.

Donna,
I recently did a portrait session for one of my friend's granddaughter. She asked for several 5x7 and 8x10 prints when all was said and done. What I did was size the image to a 5x7
proportion and created a mat in Photoshop that fit in an 8x10 frame size. This way, she could use it either way, with or without the "mat".
By creating the mat in Photoshop, I could assign any color to it, create any texture, add a drop shadow (for depth) and it all is part of a single print from my Canon Pixma printer. It's just
one more option if your sticking to standard frame sizes.

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I've used these modular frames on a few odd shaped pictures, and they came out pretty good. Just pick the length and width of the size you want. They come in a lot of colors and work with mats and glass. Just choose the length and height you need. They run from 8" to 50".
