I have a Nikon D800. It has 2 cards, 1 SD, 1 CF. I have the camera set to 1 card jpeg, 1 card raw (nef). When I import to iPhoto directly from the camera I get 1 of each, 1 jpeg, 1 raw. When I import to photos it only imports jpeg. Can anyone help me?

Review the directions for Apple Photos. It does not import RAW image files. If you want to import a RAW file you will need Adobe Lightroom OR any of the numerous photo editors available (many are free). You can find lists of the editors by using UHH's excellent Search feature at the top of this page.

Strangely enough you can convert the raw to DNG and photos will import the DNG.

Interesting because I would think that Photos would just make use of Apples Digital Camera Raw converter built into OS X, so Photos should read and convert them easily.

BUT perhaps that points to more of an alignment with Adobe & Apple?

When you say Apple Photos are you referencing the new Photos for OS X? If so, you are incorrect when you say it does not import RAW images. I shoot in RAW and put my RAW images in Photos all the time.

I should have mentioned it just recently stopped importing raw. When I first upgraded to Yosemite I could import raw. Now I can't. I take pretty decent photos, but am not very computer savvy.

I was just unable to import any raw (NEF) files, in fact, it did not even find them on the SD card - but convert the files to DNG and it imported fine.

I will have to look again, but I am a Lightroom user, not a Photos user ;)

The iPhone & iPad don't shoot raw. Photos is for importing iPad & iPhone photos.

I have Lightroom in Creative Cloud it works on my iMac but not on my MacBook Pro. It comes up with an error message about unable to change modules.

Photos is the upgrade or iPhotos. I've never imported any photos from my iPhone or iPad.

With the newer iMacs & MacBooks(after 2012 I think) they do it wirelessly. My iPad & iPhone do that now. If I take a picture on my iPhone it's on my iPad the first time they are in range of each other.

I don't shoot with an iPhone or an iPad, I use a Nikon Df. I shoot in RAW only and I upload my pictures in RAW to Photos. Whoever told you that Photos is for importing iPhone and iPad photos lied to you. Maybe Photos can ALSO import iPhone and iPad photos, I don't know, but I do know that it does import RAW photos.

I am sure that was Apple's target market, but it will import DNG files, which are raw files - I find it odd that they can read and deal with DNG and not NEF.

Actually, I can get TIFF out of my iPhone - but thats not with an Apple Camera app ;)

But, maybe thats another reason I don't use it :)

EDIT: Stop the presses!

While Photos seemed to have an issue importing NEF files from an SD card for some reason it does just fine from a disk.

Perhaps the issue is with the folder names on the SD card?
