Microsoft does this all the time. Anyone who has used MS Office in an office environment will know what this means: continual licensing, purchase of upgrades, staff training, yadda, yadda….. That is much more frustrating than Aperture which I will continue to use. I've not had to use Apple support on Aperture…. ever. I have a feeling that if I visited the genius bar-- they would still help me… but again, never needed it.

As a long term Office user for major corporate environments, I have no idea what you're talking about. Most companies stay with a version of Office for four or five years at least, and often longer before upgrading. The last three versions of Office, with each more feature rich than its predecessor, are extremely similar to each other in most respects and require virtually no additional training to perform most tasks.

Agree to disagree. My office must be more "proactive" in doing upgrades. We average 3 years. And as to what is "significant"-- that would depend on what functions dominate one's daily work.

I shall continue with Aperture as long as my I Mac lasts. It does everything I need . It was lame of Apple to quit supporting it and I think it will cost them customers in the long run. The new photos app is pretty much useless for anyone who is serious about photography. Very shortsighted of Apple.

This was announced over a year ago and so why all of this angst today?

Aperture still works but at some point it won't on the new OS. At which case you will have to stop updating your OS. The Old OS won't work with other newer software and at some point after that it won't work on the new super duper computers. So those are the potential consequences of the choice you are making. I just wanted to make sure you knew that.

Like you I was upset at Apple's decision to leave Aperture flapping in the wind. After all, I had spent years growing up with it and learning its nuances. But I decided to try Lightroom and found that Adobe had continued to advance the product, unlike Apple the last few years. I now like it much better than Aperture in many respects, and they are continuing to upgrade it. No, there are still a few things that Aperture does better, which would need to be done in Photoshop, which I use sparingly. I still have Aperture and will use it when needed. But I jumped in with both feet and found Lightroom better meets my needs. There are many tutorials available on Lightroom and I would suggest using several to get up to speed on it.

By the way, I received an e-mail today from Creative Live letting me know that cc was available for a year for $7.99/mo for Creative Live members. You don't have to buy anything to be a member. The link is here and good until the end of Sept:

I agree. As a Mac owner since the original 128K model in 1984, buying a new one has become a major dissapointment. My latest MacBook Pro is missing the following features of its 3 year old predecessor: Ability to expand memory and storage, DVD Drive, Battery test button and array of micro LEDS, IR remote, eject button, and the oscillating LED sleep indicator...once a Mac exclusive now copied by others. And removeable batteries went away the previous generation. I still use Aperture and will continue to do so, although I am playing with an evauation version of Lightroom. :-(

I was also disappointed that our 2015 Drive-E Volvo came with no real dipstick and a lame electronic one. So i just designed and installed a real dipstick. Now i can measure the level with great resolution, and feel, see and smell the oil just like any other engine I have owned.

LR is "Aperture like" but it takes some work to learn it. It is not Aperture. I don't like having to switch modules every time I want to tweak a photo. But it is a good program and the cc subscription comes with Photoshop, the big Kuhana of photo editing, and good support from Adobe. I don't mean customer hot line support I mean a commitment to the photographic community to keep improving the software. Unlike Apple, if you are a photographer, Adobe wants your business.

Love the user designed and installed real dipstick! How can a car not have one? That's like a camera without a viewfinder.

I can't agree more with Kitchen Guy. Photos is a disaster. Usually evolutions of applications improve something but Photos makes everything hard to do unless you are sharing an iPhone snapshot to Facebook et al. I too am an Apple supporter (since November 1984) and their ap evolution usually offers something you like after you learn it but Photos has me about ready to "...leave the building."
