Thank you. I have been to that screen several times. Underscore is not mentioned as an option and the rest of the computer screens seem normal. It is only My Pictures that seems to be affected. The simple solution is to rename each file after I load into the computer but I would like to know what caused this change. I think there is some confusion about what the problem is and I am probably not explaining it clearly.

Yep!... I would say you're not giving enough information for others to point you in the right direction....

Did you check your camera's date settings?
Did you try looking at your SD card using something other than PS?... Try using Windows Explorer.
Are there spaces in the file_name?
Post your question on the Adobe forum.

Go to the Canon website and download the latest apps for your camera.

Yes I have checked my settings and I have used three different cameras Canon 7d, Canon 60d, and canon 50d and all work the same. Also loaded in my wife's computer and dates are Okay and she uses win 8

I could be totally wrong here, but there are restrictions on the special characters that you can use when you name a folder. I can remember having to use underscores when I have named folders because it would not accept dashes.

If nothing else, the underscore is a much 'safer' option for naming folders and files since the "dash" really is part of the command structure of computer languages!! I have NEVER used dashes, etc in file and folder names because as I tech I ran into too many problems with those names!

Most of the answers being given relate to INSIDE programs and NOT with the file/folder naming structures!!

The date on the picture is a function of what program does the extract from the camera. That program should have a setting where you can specify how the folder is named.

If you can't fix the problem, at least you can use a bulk renamer instead of renaming each one individually. I like a program called 'Rename Master' for this.

When Microsoft changed to the long name convention, the underscore was always the default indicator for a space. In other words, Windows allowed the input of actual spaces in file names, which could not happen before. That was years ago. So, with the long name convention, spaces could appear. However, if one did not want to risk file loss with a space, as was the case prior to long name convention, you used an underscore which represented a space (with no character in the space). Dashes have always been allowed in file names. Slashes have not. Question marks have not. There are eight characters that are not allowed in file names/folder names.

I just looked at libraries in my windows 10 computer and I see dashes, not underscores. Here is a pic. Dashes in date name. I'll look at this later today, but this is what I see.

No underscores
No underscores...

Windows 10 Compatibility Tool Alert

‎06-05-2015 12:29 PM

HP has received reports from customers who are seeing cases where the Windows 10 compatibility tool that is part of Microsoft’s Get Windows 10 app is classifying some items as incompatible when in fact they are compatible.
We are currently checking with Microsoft and will report back on this matter.

May not be relevant but our HP agent here recommended I wait a month or so to download as HP can be slow updating Microsoft when changed occur.

Thanks Tony, I took a look but don't think that is a solution.

bud I think you just answered your own question. If it is only your images that are being affected you need to look at the program you are using to import them. It sounds to me like something has been changed in an import preset or you may have selected a different import preset.
