Is Lightroom worth buying when using Paintshop Pro X7

I use Paintshop Pro X7 and I was wondering if it would pay to buy Lightroom also, or can I do everything Lightroom does in Paintshop Pro? I found a You Tube Video that you can brush on corrections just to a portion of the picture, example you can choose just the shaded area to bring out detail only in that area and not on the whole picture. Is there a way to do this in Paintshop Pro x7 that I am missing? When I use a correction now, it applies to the whole picture and not just on a chosen area. Also Paintshop Pro X7 took away 'Nik Software: Color Efex Pro Plug-in" in their 64 bit x7 version, in which I really enjoyed using. Does Lightroom have plug-ins like these?
Thanks,

Lightroom does allow the use of plugins, I use Topaz plugins myself, but you can buy many plugins and/or presets for Lightroom.

Lightroom does parametric editing, meaning it applies parameters to the original file to get the look you want, the original file is never changed.

Lightroom is also a top of the line digital asset management system. Every image you import into the catalog is in a database, a database based on metadata like keywords, shutter speed, iso speed, aperture, camera make & serial number, lens used, etc.

It really shines in managing your images, giving you sorting and searching capabilities as you would expect from any high end database.

Lightroom is also Adobe Camera Raw - a very good raw converter and editing system.

I would guess that it would be easy to make use of Lightroom and to add Paintshop Pro as an external editor so you could easily go from Lightroom to Paintshop Pro for specific editing tasks, the same as going from Lightroom to Photoshop.

Yes, you CAN do that type of editing with PSP. I don't get that much into that type of edit but I have used the "dodging & Burning" that do a very good job that way. Just go to Corel.com and look for the 'learning community' I think they call it. Some very informative videos are available. Or just ASK the Customer Support area and they will point you to the proper video.

dpackard67,
You can make selected corrections is PSP X-7, you would select the specific element in the image, add 3 – 6 pixel feathering to the edges, and apply the correction.

The other option is to use the Brushes like Dodge – mid-tone to lighten softly shadowed elements.

If you had a person’s face in light shadow, you could select the face, apply 3-pixel feathering, and then use the “Fill Flash” tool to lighten the face.

How is the Raw converter compared to the one in Paintshop?

Do you have to use the selection tool in order to select the area? Lightroom you can just paint over the area with the correction. Seems to be a lot easier... Your thoughts?

Don't know, I do not have Paintshop Pro. I did use Aperture for a few years and I will say I like Adobe's raw conversion better than Apple's.

dpackard67,

That is okay, thanks to your updated post I found your reply.

You do not have to use the selection tool to use the brushes, they will work on whatever element they are designed to affect. the Dodge and Burn Brush work on highlights, mid tones, or shadows. If you set the brush diameter value small enough you can hand paint the effect over the element in question. Using the Selection Tool to select the desired image element gives you much more personal control over the later effect tools.

Corel has their own competition for LightRoom, It is Aftershot Pro 2.
I have used the Photo Paint module of Corel Draw and then Paint Shop Pro since the 90s. I am now trying the CC2015 rental but really can't seem to catch on to PS, I still go to PSP more than PS, I do use LR a lot and PSE13 more than PS. I am about to drop the CC and either get LR stand alone and put up with the hassles jumping back and forth to PSP when PSE13 doesn't do what I want or even learn Aftershot.

My big complaint is that many of the add ons and plug ins don't instantly mesh with Corel products like they do Adobe. And so few resources and tutorials etc by comparison.

Robert,

There are two major problems with plugins in both Adobe and Corel;
the upgrade from 32bit to 64bit,
and the inability of the plugin creators to upgrade their old 32bit plugins to the 64bit systems.

In the distant past (32bit Windows) all the plugins with the .8bf extension would perform well om both image editing programs.

Hmm, the PSP X7 Ultimate put both 64 and 32 bit versions on my machine, I haven't used the 32 bit version because of the speed difference. Guess I need to check the 32 bit one and see if my NIK and other stuff is there in the menus somewhere.
