I have my Nikon D5100 set to fine and large. I noticed that when I send just one or two photos, the time to download them is extremely long. With my old Mac I could decrease the size so the D/L would go faster. Now I have a Dell computer with windows. How can I reduce the size and still keep good resolution and make it easier for my family to quickly upload the pictures to their computers.
Thanks in advance for your UHH advice/
Ron

Most, if not all editors will allow you to resize the image.

Of course, you could always go back to Mac :D

Changing the size of the images is easy what program are you using? When I upload to a site like this one or send photos via email I make a copy of the large file adding the word "web" to the file name. I usually make these images not larger than 8 x 10 @72 dpi. This gives a nice size on the screen but is still compact enough to be uploaded or downloaded with some speed depending on the quality of your internet connection.

There are a number of programs on in windows that you could use. Paint is one of them and photo gallery is another.

I have been using Faststone image viewer for some years as a very easy to use viewer. It will do all sorts of things including a very simple quick re-sizer - you can re-size an image to the size you see it on the screen with just one click. I use it all the time for re-sizing photos I am going to email. It is free for home users and you can find out about it here:

have a look and see what you think.

Windows comes with Paint. You can resize photos there. No need to download or purchase software just to resize photos.

It's easy if you have Photoshop or Elements. When I submit my photos to the newspaper I work for, I first open them in Photoshop and then do a "Save As". In the process, I select medium compression, which reduces the file size, but not the size of the photo itself. A 2.0 meg photo will reduce to about 350 k or so.

I use a program called Easy Thumbnails. You can resize a whole folder of images and add an extention etc. http://www.fookes.com/ezthumbs/

In Windows just right click on the file, select SEND TO, select MAIL RECIPANT, select SIZE from the dropdown window then your e-mail program will open with a new e-mail with the file attached waiting for you to put the address.

If you have M$ Office on the machine the photo and picture program will allow you to re-size easily.

And that's one of the many sacrifices of Windows, OS & OSX are a close relative of Linux.

I'm no defender of Micro$oft, but man, that's bandwidth and file size, not the Operating System.
