Live in Naperville. Calumet photo in Oakbrook is unfortunately closed. Believe it or not the best buy at Fox Valley Mall has some really informed sales people. That said they only carry Nikon, Cannon, and Sony, and seem to have a real slant toward Sony.
No, they've recently reopened under new management and hit the ground running. I've been there a couple of times.
Calumet was taken over by Ritz/Wolf. They are not Nikon dealers. The Nikon cameras they carry are gray-market only. I don't know about their other brands. Central Camera is your best bet.
When you get to ProCam ask for Bill Skinner. He's great.

I've lived in the area for 40 years and I am sure he meant Rte. 59 and Rte. 34. A simple mis-type.

We plan to visit in the next few weeks our children in Naperville,Il, near Chicago. They are thinking of buying a DSLR; can anyone suggest shops in that area which carry a good selection of DSLRs, Pentax, Sony, etc, in addition to Canon and Nikon. I think their best shopping strategy is to handle the various makes; I will of course be on hand to extol the virtues of my Mighty Pentax K 5.
I really don't want them hitting Best Buy or other big box stores which usually have uninformed personnel!

Calumet is back in business. You'll have to be the judge of adequacy of selection. The web site is limited but maybe helpful to you
http://www.calumetphoto.com/index.htmlNote the store near Oak Brook Mall is the closest to Naperville.
There is also Central Camera in the loop. This is an old fashioned camera store with
all sorts of camera gear spanning generations stacked from floor to ceiling. Workers have been around for a long time and really know what they are talking about. You'll have to call them to check lines they carry.
http://centralcamera.com/Otherwise just Google "Chicago camera" and you'll get a ton. The two above are just two I have done business with. Both, along with Fry's electronics are where I go to get a tech fix.

Central Camera on Wabash Ave in the Loop - close to the Palmer House and near many nice, family-friendly restaurants. Also w/i a few blocks of the Art Institute and Buckingham Fountain. Central Camera is an old-line store with knowledgeable clerks - look them up on line. They don't focus on mail-order business (but can arrange to ship some purchases). Their style is primarily aimed at hands-on sales. Worked nearby for 16+ years and Central was my go-to store.
FWIW. While Central Camera may still be a great place to buy photographic equipment, I think that the average person will find it to be VERY INCONVENIENT to go to if they live in Naperville ...
You can either drive into town and pay an extraordinarily high parking fee OR you can do a round-trip on the
commuter train (
I know where the "stop" is in Downers Grove ... there may/must be one in Naperville, too ... it's a l-o-n-g ride into the city from Naperville regardless of the means of conveyance!) which will probably cost almost as much for each person as the parking fee ... so, if there is a party of two-or-three, it will be a fairly expensive excursion.
THAT's my long way of saying that you should take advantage of the
nearby stores which have been recommended which are in Dupage County, and environs.
BTW. If you are fairly
up-to-date on what is available, then what makes you think that the sales people will have more knowledge than you have?
I would think that YOU could probably explain the pluses-and-minuses of having this-or-that feature on a camera more objectively than most sales people ...
.....For example, this-or-that is the advantage-or-disadvantage of a pocketable camera ...
.....This-or-that is the advantage-or-disadvantage of a "Bridge" camera ...
.....This-or-that is the advantage-or-disadvantage of a DSLR ...
.....This-or-that is the advantage-or-disadvantage of a Full Frame camera sensor ...
.....Et cetera.
Got my RX100iii at Calumet
Nice people good prices
Easy trip from Naperville
Have fun!

Aurora and Naperville are two of the Metra Express stops that make only 3 stops before ending up at Union Station. Really not a bad ride. When we are going into central Chicago we always park in Naperville (free) and take Metra.

From 1934 to '44 I drooled at Central every Sat. after my weekly piano lesson ............coveting Leica, Contax, Rollieflex, Graflex, ........and coming down out of the stratosphere, Retina, Welte, Bantam, Perfex amd Foth-Derby. And finally, PILOT 6!
I too have done business with Calumet and I was very satisfied.
Very Interesting. Two of Chicago's best (IMHO) camera stores closed and have be resurrected by former employees: Calumet Photo and Helix. I'll have to check them both out next time I'm in the area.
