I am having a lot of fun with flash photography. On an earlier post of mine, several members suggested getting a flash meter. They are very expensive new ($350 on up). So I have been looking at quite a few used ones (want to keep it under $150 total) and there are a lot of options.
Minolta flash meters around $50 to $110
Gossen Luna Star F2 at about $150 give or take
Seconic 328 from $90 to $150
And a whole bunch of others ones, too.
I am just an amateur so no need for a fancy flash meter, I want one that will give me a good reading with multiple flashes. I am leaning towards the Minolta III if it is recommended by UHH members because of it's price, but will quickly consider a Seconic or Gossen (or other brands) if they are a lot better. Thank you!

I have both the Luna Pro F and the Minolta IV F. Both are highly accurate and I have them calibrated to each other within a 1/4 of a stop.

Thank you, but the meter I need must have a flash meter. Thank you, though!

It is a flash meter (Notice the F in the model number)

Thank you, I am looking really hard at the Minolta IIIf and IVf. Both are in my price range.

As I said in a different post (here), I have the IVF. One of thee (very) nice things are the attacments that are available from Minolta (used) and from the Kenko 1100 (new or used). I think I have the "whole" collection - LOL... Also, I have the Minolta SpotMeter F, but have not had a chance to calibrate it (flash poretion) yet.

That's good to know, thank you. I am a little overwhelmed trying to figure out all of these meters, I think I am going to get a Minolta IV F.

I have a Minolta IV F. They are sensational meters. The meters are far more sensitive to light than any film or sensor. The manual for this beast can be found at http://www.butkus.org/chinon/minolta/minolta_flash_meter_iv/minolta_flash_meter_iv.htm . Be sure to check it out to make sure it does what exactly what you want. Here is the link to Ebay for that meter check it out. There are a lot of good sellers on Ebay. Just check out there feed back ratings and the customer comments. Also if you pay with Payapl, if you don't get what was advertised you get your money back.

Hahaa! I always allowed my employees to do a little web surfing, texting and things like that. I found that happy employees did more work and had less gripes if you overlooked certain little things.

I am following several on ebay right now, should find a good one soon. I like the fact that it uses AA batteries, so many other ones use odd sizes. Thank you for the link to the manual. I may need that!

Another vote for Polaris nice easy to use and not to much money. Mine is from the film days so I forgot the model number.

On the Minolta meters, I believe all the flash meters are appended with an F on the model name. I've owned IIIF and IVF meters.

Are you checking eBay. Best used selection and good average prices there most of the time.

Minolta are good, but you're more likely to find a larger inventory of Sekonic, followed by Gossen. I just did a search for "Minolta Flash Light meter" on eBay and then flipped over to sold listings. This search shows the minolta flash meters sold on eBay for the last 6 months. Prices all over the map... beauty of eBay.

I've been buying/selling film and photo gear on eBay for over 15 years and never a truly bad transaction.. WATCH feedback closely and you won't likely have a problem. No money lost and no bad feedback for me on my account, and I don't buy from anyone with less than 99% plus feedback.

Do the same search for Gossen, Seconic, Polaris, etc and ONLY look at paid listing when searching price ranges.

One thing you should know when buying Minolta meters. They have the Flash meter version and then the Auto meter version for example Flash meter IV and Auto meter IV-F both measure flash but the Flash meter version without the letter F are better for flash.

All of the Auto meter version can measure flash except the Auto Meter III (without the F. There is the version IIIf which does measure flash), Auto Meter II and the original Auto Meter.
The original Flash Meter doesn't measure ambient light. The Flash Meter II does measure ambient light but very limited. From the III onward the Flash Meter version measure ambient light as well as the Auto Meter counterpart but better in flash measurement.

I'm a big fan of the Sekonic L308s for a basic flash meter. I've had mine for many years (Not the s model but earlier) and it continues to serve me very well. Helps me with exposure and balancing lights. New, about $195. Used on EBay for $100 or so.

I have the Polaris dual 5.

It was less expensive than the other meters that had both spot metering and ambiant combined. It was nice to get to hold it in my hands and play with it inside B&H with a pro right by my side.
