Well, I have news for you all. I got my Windows 10 last week. It is the Pro version and it is running just fine. I had been running and reviewing the technical build version previously.

It is funny because I still run XP on one of my laptops (my other one is an Apple), My server runs on 2013, and I never had Win 8. I screwed up when installing the Win 10 technical preview initially. I was running Win 7 on my main computer and I made a virtual partition for the Win 10 technical preview. I just happened to be watching the Royals during the playoffs and I did not pay attention when it asked me where I wanted to install the Windows 10. It overwrote my 7. Oh, crap! This is the computer that I do all of my photography in. I got lucky and it seemed to work just fine with the 1st build; not so good with some of the other builds.

Then I was reading here about people getting an Icon for making a reservation for the real Win 10. I never got this Icon. Then, without warning, I noticed what I thought was another another build being installed on my computer early last week. I thought "Swell. I will not get to use my computer before having to go to work". To my surprise, it loaded Win10 Pro and it did not ask me for a previous activation code or anything. It does have some nice features that were not included in any of the builds; just talked about. Of course, there is a lot of crap on it that I do not like. I will take care of that.

Now, I am going to try a mass deployment over my network. This ought to be interesting since I have mismatched hardware on every computer. I have been successful before, so I shall see what happens. I have to go and clean my gutters first.

LOL... I believe that's actually "Jade Helm", but Jay probably has a better chance at being real. I'm by no stretch of the imagination a Microsoft fan, but even I don't subscribe to the conspiracy theories bantered about and paranoia generated with an attempt by Microsoft to update and publicize their new OS. However, I do think I heard that step one of the update requires you to construct and wear a tin foil hat. I don't think even Orson Wells could have done it so well. ...Be afraid, be very afraid :-)
btw... I'll stick with my Mac...

I was on my Win 7 computer yesterday morning when it started acting funny. My Malware program kept popping up saying it has successfully blocked an intrusion. But when it showed me what had been successfully blocked it was always a Windows file.

I had read somewhere that Microsoft will be starting some of the preliminary downloading ahead of the July 29th date and I am now wondering if that was what I was experiencing yesterday. Was MS starting on the Windows 7 conversion early? I assume converting Win 7 computers will be a bigger process that converting Win 8.1 computers? Nothing similar occurred yesterday on my two 8.1 computers.

When I started my computer this A.M. it took a long time and then went through a Correction Process before it completed the regular start up. Works fine now. Anyone know if MS has started the upgrading process?

I run W7 and so far have no such experience.

On the other hand, it's hard to believe that a Windows machine would be giving you trouble.

Funny Jerry. I used to cuss Windows out quite regularly, but since I installed Iolo System Mechanic Pro and use it regularly I haven't had any issues with Windows misbehaving. I can't even recall the last time I saw the BSOD. The biggest source of problems seem to be registry errors, which System mechanic finds quite regularly following Windows updates and program installs/uninstalls. I could easily imagine that a well used computer which never had the registry cleaned up could have 1000s of registry errors which would cause a good deal of OS instability.

Actually, Jerry, as I mentioned, I had read somewhere.....MS would be installing "parts" of Win 10 ahead of the 29th date.

I had heard that as well - possibly from an earlier post by you, possibly not, but I believe its true. I run BootRacer to track my OS boot time. What I have noted is that prior to the "Get Windows 10" icon appearing in my system tray, my boot time as reported by BootRacer averaged around 25 seconds (my computer has a solid state boot drive & 1 TB hard drive). Now my boot time is averaging around 45 seconds. Also I have been having stability problems with Chrome. It will randomly freeze up and then refuse to restart after I get it shut down. I have to restart my computer in order to get Chrome to load again. Both of these issues started after the "Get Windows 10" icon first appeared in my system tray.

Wow, it's getting scary. Multiple builds?, virtual partitions...Win Pro? All I hope is that my Win 8.1 with classic shell start menu will look the same after the upgrade. (ie not like the windows 8 menu) And the upgrade will run pretty much by itself and not require a computer engineer to coddle it along. That is my hope

I know, showing my lack of computer skill, just hope to get out and take some photos in the near future.

Microsoft is not forcing the upgrade to windows 10, they are offering a free upgrade to windows 10 for a limited time. You have to go to the Microsoft website and register for the upgrade.

Thanks for the explanation. I'll talk to our computer guru grandson and get his opinion.

Talk to any 5-10 year old. They are so computer savvy that it is scary! :)

Windows 10 is not updating. You have your computer set for auto updates and windows is updating their files on your computer so they will be compatible with windows 10 if and when you decide to upgrade.
Take your computer off of auto update and select if you want updates or not. I did the early trial windows 10 update, went as smooth as a babies but. Works great for me, faster, and easier to use than my windows 8.1

I believe on my AIO Tablet 10 was downloaded a couple weeks ago and I'm supposed to get a notification on or after the 29th to install it. I'm not very computer literate and have only had Windows so I know nothing about other operating systems. I just hope this is a more user friendly upgrade. We'll see in a couple days.
Aloha, M.M.

Having been stung by Windows Vista - - Total Crap - - almost worse than Windows ME - -
I am VERY hesitant to apply the 'Upgrade' to Win10.
I HATED the Win8 interface - fixed by applying SHELL, and later fixed in the Win8.1 update
But am somewhat intrigued because this is the version AFTER the Win8 garbage
Perhaps Win10 will be the Win7 equivalent that followed the Vista disaster ??
Also understand that some features I often use in Win7 will no longer be available in Win10, and other possibly valuable features WILL be in Win10 that 7 doesn't have.
I am VERY afraid of the mandatory update function - you have NO choice in Win10 - when they push an update - you HAVE to eat it. You can't defer or 'wait a bit'. Probably can't uninstall them either ?? Don't know if system restore will function to get rid of an unstable update ?

I would not worry about it too much, Merlin. !0 is vastly improved over 8. I am still not too cool with the interface, but I knew it was coming. It does have some real neat innovations over 8. They also changed the start up kernel. It starts better on a bare bones system and it allows for faster start up of sub routines (programs). The automatic updates are not all that bad either. So far, they seem to be putting through some security updates that have failed on my systems in the past. And as I stated previously, I have no problems with my Nvidia graphics cards since Nvidia (and I presume others) are on top of things. Oh, and I did a system restore a couple of times just for the heck of it and it works.

Tom - - appreciate the insights - -
I assume you've been running the pre-release version??
I build my own boxes - and will likely clone my system drive before any update to 10

That is a good system. I am running raid 5. I don't know why. Lol. I almost pulled the trigger on an ultra wide monitor Saturday. I am going to get a lens for my camera instead.

If you are not sure, cloning is a good idea. I did that when 7 came out originally. I too use Asus boards on my own stuff only that I am running AMD (a 6 core also). I am only running with a 850 watt power supply, but it seems to work with my video card. Here is the funny part; I initially ran with dual Corsair 2x4 DDR 4 memory and the system runs fine. However my Adobe programs seemed to run a bit slow, so I added more ram and made it 16 gig. I se no difference in speed. I am strictly talking about transfer rate from lightroom to photoshop.

My point is that when I put on Win 10 (and yes, I started with the technical builds first), everything sped up. The reason that I like Win 10 so far is that I did screw up when I went to clone 10 on my drive and accidentally overlaid my Win7. I was a nervous wreck as it was setting up. After the initial install completed, I threw in another drive and cloned it. Then I did my usual schtick and threw everything I could at it to mess it up, and nothing! No blue screen of death, no lock ups, nothing. I was impressed. Except - one of the builds really sucked and strange things happened that I had to manually repair; sometimes unsuccessfully. Then, with the next build, everything went back to being o.k.. The one thing that irks me with Win 10 is that I now have to jump through a couple of hoops just to look at my update history. I'll change that. Another thing I do not like is the fact that it is dumbed down even more than Win 7. I suppose this is o.k for the average user.

before I found out the quirks of Win10, I clicked the button to get the download when it was ready. Now that I see the issues involved, I don't want it. Will it automatically download it and install it since I accepted it or is there a way to rescind that acceptance of the offer? I can't find anything that says what to do it you changed your mind.
