Finding my wife a Canon....
I have about $400 and want to buy my wife a Canon camera, which one do you feel is the best for this amount and why? I looked at a new T3, but am curious if there is an older camera that would do a better job. I would like to stay away from refurbs, but am not opposed to them. It mainly just needs to be decent with ISO noise indoors and I'd like a 2.8 cross sensor (if possible)...

The Canon 40D can be had used for about 400.00 and it is a good camera with low noise. I have the 40 and the 50D, the 40 has better noise than the 50.
I agree with Raydance...that's a good camera.
for a bit more a t2i is a good camera also, much better quality than you'd think for the price.
canon 40d is the way to go.
I use a 40D. It's considerably better than the Rebel line. You would be happy with a 40D.

Yes...to clarify...the t2i is more expensive than a used 40D but it's a lower model.
If you already have a lens, the 40D would be a great camera to have. If you need a lens and body, I would look at an older XTi. I have one and it is easy to use and takes a decent picture. You can pick up a low mileage XTi on ebay for less than $400.
Hi, I've had both the XTi and the 40D and they are both excellent cameras. If your wife is going to be serious get the 40D but if she just wants snapshots then the XTi will work. Have fun and keep shootin'. Mike
another thing about the 40d is that you can use full frame L lenses as well as the others. best of both worlds but the 40 is way better quality built and better performance.
Question: what is her photography skill level? What are her (or, better, your for her) aspirations as a photographer? No matter what her (or your ) photog aspirations are, seriously consider anything in Canon's Powershot G series, such as G11. But - be careful if you do get her one of those - you'll soon appropriate it for yourself, and then have to get her another one.
Also, I'd have no reservations about getting a refurbished camera directly from Canon, or from a reputable dealer, e.g., B&H.
My Dad shoots an xti and loves it. They are pretty good. I may however check out a 40D, because I'd rather she have room to grow as she gets better.
Thanks!!!!!

The XTI is a fine camera as long as used with a good lens and not over 400 iso. Photos are as good as anything else in it's class and many times, if used correctly, better.

If she doesn't want to change lenses, look at the XS40hs, great camera with LONG zoom! For about 400
I'm curious what about the Power shot Pro 1 camera..is that any good? Also the canon speedlite 430EX..is that any good?
