I have an old Pioneer tuner in the garage connected to a pair of big 1970's AR (Acoustic Research) speakers. Over the past few days, it has been cutting out occasionally for maybe ten seconds. The other radio keeps playing, so it's not the station cutting out. Today, I saw "Overload" flashing in the display when it went silent. Obviously, it's overloaded and is taking a break. So, what's going on?

Exactly what model Pioneer is it Jerry ? It cannot be too old if it has a display ?

Jerry - I am not sure but I had an old Kenwood TK140x, 200 watt receiver do that. Turned out that a capacitor was fried and it would kick out and then after while come back on, till it totally burned out.

A tuner on its own has to have an amplifier to work. If they are combined then it is called a receiver. AR3a speakers are top notch, but will sound terrible if the amp or receiver does not have enough power. The amp will 'clip' if turned up too much to get good sound. It will overload the amp and the resulting sound can kill the speakers. These AR speakers can handle up to 400 watts when fused with an 1/8 amp quick blow fuse. your amp should be rated at a minimum of 25 watts per channel at 4 ohms with both channels driven. Good luck with the fix.

Istillhave an old Onkyo and wharfdale speakers, hooked up to a turn table. still have all my old record albumes from the early 60's as well as my dad's older 78's. This brings back a lot of memories. I think it's time for ELP's Brain Salad Surgery
